My looks are polarizing, so I had a very bizarre OCI experience.

School Range: DCNG
Market(s): NYC/DC
Approximate class rank: top 5%.
Law review: No.
Work experience: 2 years, TTT stuff (non-management retail/shit-finance)
IP background: None.
Anything else that might have an impact? One of LGBT/URM/Non-traditional/Military, undoubtedly, plus massmailing my ass off. I came into OCI having done 1-2 weeks of callbacks already thanks to reaching out to firms ahead of time. By the time I got CBs with my top choices, I had 22+ hours of live practice talking about myself already. Interviewing skills pre-OCI were definitely pretty good to begin with because of my customer service background. Others I knew were far, far below median and still copped v10 offers due to hustling: reaching out to firms during the summer for "informational interviews," informational phone convos, firm receptions, mock interviews with career services, professors, alumni, etc. Smart, strategic bidding is key, too.
Screening Interviews: 17.
Callbacks received: all but 1.
Callbacks accepted: 11 from OCI.
Offers w/vault ranges: V1 and above.
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback?: Zero
Thank-you notes sent: None, ever. Not even for congratulations emails.

School Range: Lower T14
Market(s): NYC
Approximate class rank: bottom 25%
Law review/secondary journal: Secondary
Work experience: Yes
IP Background: No
Anything else that might have an impact? Yes—unusual work history (ran my own successful business)
Screening interviews: 22
Callbacks received: 4
Callbacks accepted: 4
Offers w/ vault range: 4 (1 V20, 3 V50)
Thank you letters: Yes, for all
Advice: if you're substantially below median, don't waste your time mass mailing in July. Targeted emails directly to alums or even just firms and practice areas you're interested in, OTOH, are extremely useful, and you should start them during the school year. Informational interviews are one reason why it's smart to spend your 1L summer in NYC if your first semester grades are average or worse. And if there's anything significant that brought down your grades (death in nuclear family, major illness), be sure to address it in your screeners. Last, avoid scripted answers—answer questions, but focus mostly on having good conversations with people, and ask lots of questions about the screener's career.

Re: Fall 2015 OCI Results
This is anon who wrote above advice section: wanted to add that smart bidding is absolutely essential, and ppl with bad grades should go all in on their screeners at OCI. If it's pre-select, then you've already cleared their cutoffs, and it's all about personality. If it's a lottery, then as long as you've carefully selected firms that have hired from your school and your GPA range before, the same is true—your challenge is getting firms to believe that you're a good fit (smart, personable, hard working). All of my offers came from firms that had hired from my school in my GPA range before.

I had pretty terrible grades, but still got a solid number of CBs. Advice spewed here is absolutely essential to make sure you have a similar outcome.
1) Bid smartly. I didn't bother bidding on any V10 firms for instance. Maximized my bid list with firms where I knew I'd pass the grade hurdle or be close.
2) Practice interviewing. I didn't really practice, which is why I missed converting more screeners to CBs. I realized as I kept doing more of them what was working and what was not. As others said, if you're spending too much time answering questions, you're fucking up. It will be boring and/or sound scripted even if your resume and experience is amazing. If you can get the interviewer talking a lot, you'll probably get the CB because they will just remember a pleasant conversation with you. Just add on a question to the end of whatever answer you just gave. (i.e. i think i would be interested in this area of law because blah blah blah. Did you know you always wanted to work in [insert interviewers practice area here]).
I got 2 CB offers from interviews where I barely even talked. That being said, just smile, and have solid answers about your resume, why X firm, why law school.
3) Mass mailing in July didn't help me. Probably because grades sucked. You'll be better off forming relationships if you want to see any real results. I.e. email people who you've met at networking receptions, or people from your school, and etc.

Re: Fall 2015 OCI Results
I agree with the earlier note about sub-tiers people are using not making any sense. I don't think seeing how D or C performs will help a G student. If anything D/C is much closer to P in terms of law firm hiring. Can we just out the school we're at?
