There are also a few K&L specific threads floating around. Search for "gates" in the topic.

I have a friend who claims his brother, who works in the Chicago office, said they've been pretty slow for younger associates and they just laid off a bunch of first year associates. Also claimed, they've just been 100% offering their summers to build back their reputation, but then letting them go after the first year. It could just be a game of telephone and exaggeration, so that's why I was wondering if anyone could confirm?

I was a Winston SA in Chicago and can definitely confirm that is not true. All the 2013 class that got offers were still there, the only few that weren't were on clerkships and/or left Chicago. They were insanely busy and hired a bunch of 3Ls for the class of 2014 because it was really busy. Also, all the class of 2014 people are still there. I am not saying Winston wouldn't lay people off again if things got slow, but things aren't slow now, they just had a record year and they're not laying off first years.
