OP here. Obviously you can speculate that I will get laid off soon. Just as easily it could be that my firm operates this way, as evidenced by my confirmation that a lot of people are billing very reasonable hours. I can't confirm that anyone's job is safe, but I'm not complaining at how it's going and nobody has said anything about the hours. The couple of times I have stayed past 7 this place is a ghost town. Make of that what you will.DJ JD wrote:This thread did not go the way OP imagined.

My firm is usually a ghost town by 6, and yet just about all the associates bill at least 2000 hours a year.Anonymous User wrote:OP here. Obviously you can speculate that I will get laid off soon. Given the likely size of your firm (like DF says, it's probably got at least 200 attorneys), I don't think you really know everyone's hours. I suspect you're in a group that's slow, and you're extrapolating based on limited anecdotal information. But I of course don't know. Perhaps you really do work in a NYC law firm that has 200+ attorneys, pays market, and yet expects associates to bill 1,400 hours per year (which would mean that the partners probably make less than the senior associates). It just seems rather unlikely.

Yo. When I was working in ERISA, my hours were awful. I could only hope for less hours.Desert Fox wrote:lol 20 summers. Jesus that must be a 200 person office.
I'm guessing OP is in a slow group in a normal firm and just doesn't realize they are about to get LAID OFF PWND
Or they work in ERISA and don't realize their group isn't representative of shit.

We used to have a ship, but alas. Also, DF, I am still in the Chi. Freezing during the winter and hating tourist during this "summer".rpupkin wrote:Could you two get a room? OP here. Not flame but you have sufficiently convinced me to stop enjoying and appreciating my job and to start watching my back.rpupkin wrote:Could you two get a room? Leave it to TLS to take the enjoyment out of one's job

I mean, 1400 hrs is like, 30 a week. That's barely a full time job. Sounds nice but I don't think many market-paying firms expect that little of people.trey ohh five wrote:Leave it to TLS to take the enjoyment out of one's job
I think "watch your back" is good advice here.

i mean not really because theres nothing you can do. if youre gonna get shitcanned theyll give you a little while to apply to new places. forcing him to lateral to a firm and go from loving life to hating life isnt the best advice here.dixiecupdrinking wrote:I mean, 1400 hrs is like, 30 a week. if youre in a niche group, i think that shit is fine. firms should turn profits at about 1000 hours on people of all levels. you should still be profitable for the firm. if they just gave 20 (or 18/19) of those summers offers, then clearly thisnt out of the ordinary. if they no offered half the class maybe start looking to lateral, but honestly, id risk going down with a sinking ship at 1400 hours per year if youre gaining any experience that isnt litigation - its all in demand right now. you are literally making 2x as much per hour as plenty of NYC associates.

OP here. Any suggestions on how to approach this situation, assuming that the general speculation on this thread is correct?dixiecupdrinking wrote:I mean, ok, but "I'm gonna just enjoy working for a sinking ship until they fire me" is a far cry from "hey guys I found mid law paradise"

Re: Found the Fabled Mid-Law Unicorn Job
Pretty sure I had a CB for a "fabled midlaw" job. They were in a tiny market, paid below market but above 6 figures, and took a single summer associate a year. This does not sound similar

OP here. I was clearly misreading the situation and will be contacting recruiters and polishing my resume asap. Thanks all for your insight into the legal market. I will update this thread as it develops.

Is this thread real?
I don't understand what is happening. OP found a fabled midlaw unicorn job but now realizes he is about to be fired from a normal big law job.
Like, this is a joke thread yes?
