If you apply using the firm's online application portal, is it recommended that you also follow up with a recruiter via email? If so, what should I say?

How did you go about contacting the firm you had an offer at previously but declined? I'm in sort of a similar situation, but had an offer from this firm in a different market and am now interested in their NY office. Advice?

curious about this as well.

Answered this earlier
Ummm I just emailed the hiring partner that emailed me when I declined my offer and just asked if I could reapply for an associate position because my circumstances had changed etc.. Someone from recruiting called me within a few hours to ask why I wanted to switch and told me to send them my grades as soon as I had them. Grades came out early June and they got back to me a few days ago with cb invitation. I dunno I didn't say anything elaborate or lengthy.
But when they asked me why I wanted to switch I just said (truthfully) that my personal circumstances had changed so that I wanted to start in NYC and that I wanted to do certain corporate work that wasn't really an option in my current market. This firm knew where I was summering since I informed them which offer I had accepted when I declined them, but for the other firms i was too paranoid to tell them where i was summering in my initial email. I waited until I knew that they were open to meeting me or reviewing my application (either because they called me or sent me an email asking me to send my materials) before telling them. I don't know if i'm just being paranoid or whatever but yeah.

I just asked them not to contact my summer firm until after I confirmed with them that I had received a return offer (this is the V5 i have a cb with next week) and they said they completely understood and wouldn't contact my current firm until then.

Hope this is the case. I've just been submitting cold mass mails and I'm hoping that those firms aren't calling my current firm for information. I'm still not entirely sure if I'm going to end up switching markets (depends on personal circumstances which haven't quite been resolved yet), and I don't want to jeopardize my offer at the current firm.

Saw somewhere that applying too early may lead to your app getting to the bottom of the pile (and perhaps being forgotten), but... I guess I'll start too then!

Is it better to send my resume to the HR directors or partners that I met through networking receptions?

To the places where I've applied early, I just made a note to follow up with them in a few weeks. I think that's appropriate if you're someone that likes to get a jump start on things.

Yeah, its probably either too early or so early you gain no benefit. Summer programs are just past halfway done at some firms.
