my friends in LA biglaw drove pre-biglaw Jettas and Priuses. Everyone in LA has a Prius.

any variety of entry level luxury sedan (audi A4, lexus, mercedes C-class, BMW 3 series), pseudo-luxury sedan like infiniti or acura, or hybrid, ranging down to more modest cars like a camry

for people with families you'll see SUVs (acura RDX, BMW X5)

seniors might have a nicer car like a 7 series or an S-class or an A6/S5

cars matter more in SoCal than in other places

i dont see how a c-class or a 3 series is "try hard." it's a luxury car that isnt as large as a 5 series or as ugly as an E class. the 3 series also has outstanding residuals. id get the car because it's a great car and great for living in a big city, not because i "couldnt afford" the mid-level car. the 5 series is a great car, but i think id have a hard time parking it places, and it would be too large for my needs.

anything below a porsche 911 screams "try hard" for sure.

IMO, a good buy is a good used 3 series.

i dont drive anything right now, but might look in the next 12 months or so if the finances shape up well enough for it to make sense.

in terms of what my colleagues drove: nicest i saw was an M3/S4, and shittiest was about as shitty as you can imagine. average car for an associate that i saw was a used luxury car in the 3 series range or some equivalent thereof.

it's pretty try-hard dude. there are comparable cars with way better value, people get a 3 series or a c-class cause they want to be a person that drives a bimmer or a mercedes, not because they're smart. and the rough analog to an e-class in your scenario would be the m3 not a 5 series.

Say what you will, but I bought a 2001 325 back in 2009 with 50k miles on it and it still runs like a charm with comparatively little maintenance at almost 15 years. I went for it because my dad had a 3 series that he bought in 1986, two years before I was born, and that thing ran until 2007 without any major overhaul. Same engine, same trans. Racked up 450k miles on it before all was said and done between commuting and ferrying three kids to hockey tournaments. Just an anecdote, but it made me a believer, though I'm not really a car person. My dad still has it sitting in a garage--pretty sure he's going to ask to be buried in it in lieu of a casket. Hell, mine might beat his out in terms of age, though definitely not mileage.
