Lower GPA medians than other peer firms. I'm trying to gauge the firm's overall reputation, name brand, and its future in the NYC biglaw scene.

Weil, traditionally, seems to be a renowned firm. In researching it's clear that their Bankruptcy practice is (was?) the bread and butter. Other practice groups (PEMA, for example) seem to be among the best.

Obviously the biggest issue is the recent batch of layoffs in 2013.

Generally, then, I'm wondering if there is a consensus in what is expected from Weil in years to come. Do people find it to be a healthy firm, poised to maintain (if not improve upon) it's current lower V10 rank? Yes I know Vault rankings are largely bullshit, so perhaps rephrase my inquiry to whether Weil is geared to remain among the best firms in NYC? Id imagine there are general thoughts in the NYC legal world about certain firms being rock solid, falling, treading water, etc.?

you are looking for reputation compared to other v10 firms, yet stated that you are only competing with other v30 firms. your query is irrelevant to the choices you have. its reputation is better than the v30 firms you have, stop wasting peoples time.

If I'm leaning slightly towards litigation but am not totally sure, what would be the better pick between Weil and Skadden?

I like the people at both firms but feel more of a connection with Weil. Is that enough to choose it over Skadden, when Skadden is so highly ranked in so many practice areas? I also worry about reputation/stability issues at Weil.

I'm agonizing over this choice. Appreciate the help!

There is absolutely zero reason to be concerned with Weil's stability. Their layoffs were confined to the complex civil litigation groups in the Boston and Houston offices who were not justifying the premium billing rates that Weil charges. The firm was open and transparent with the layoffs and is in a very strong position moving forward.

This poster is so incredibly misinformed.

OP, tell us which other firms you're considering, and the practice groups you're open to. Otherwise, as a general rule choose Weil over v30.
