Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
There are worse places to be stuck at than at HP for near biglaw salary. even if you do 3-5 years of biglaw, there is no guarantee that you will get a better inhouse position. Furthermore, there is also no guarantee that it will eventually lead to a GC position. Most people in biglaw don't make it to become a partner. I remember reading somewhere that a biglaw associate is similar to being a NFL running back. Most players only last 3-5 years. There are only a small percentage of cats who will get the big money long term contracts.. ie Adrian Peterson ... LT... etc. You can't count on being in biglaw for the rest of your career.
Yes the training is somewhat decent in biglaw, but if your end goal is inhouse, which most people will end up anyways, I think it is probably a smart move to take the HP position right out of law school.
Keep in mind that even though inhouse positions value law firm experience, if you look at a lot of the job postings, they also want people who have inhouse experience as well.
Some people told me that in the past, inhouse jobs were ONLY open to people with 3-5 years biglaw. More recently, the past 5 years, more and more positions have been opening up for jr and fresh law school grads. I'm having a hard time grappling whether there is causation or correlation seeing GCs with 3-5 years biglaw experience.

Thanks! Be prepared for why HP/in-house. And why lit/corp/ip, whichever you are interviewing for. The rest of my questions were pretty typical of those asked during law firm interviews. Everyone was super chill.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Above poster. Offer just now

Do you know how many they are taking at the office? Any indication that they had given all their offers out?
When was your call back?
Thanks! Congrats

Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
No idea how many they are taking, but my sense was that they are expanding it (i think there were 6 last year, all in PA). i'm pretty sure they haven't given all offers out, let alone many at all. i was one of the first CBs and i had given them a deadline bc of another expiring offer. i was also told i was one of first offers. good luck and keep us updatedAnonymous User wrote:Nice! Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
Interview went well, I thought.
They didn't give any indication on a time-line or numbers of summers they were taken. It did sound like they were expanding form the last two years.
I was also told the starting salary was 150k.

Isn't HP going down the drain?

This is hyperbolic, but even if it is true, a blue chip corporation like HP is 1000 times less likely to quickly supernova into oblivion than a law partnership. Instead, they get sold or less profitable divisions are spun off. Even if its totally obvious to the entire world that the ship is going down, it's an incredibly slow death. Unlike a Law Partnership, HP is a real company with assets, intellectual property, value to the world, etc.sundance95 wrote:This is hyperbolic, but even if it is true, a blue chip corporation like HP is 1000 times less likely to quickly supernova into oblivion than a law partnership. Thoughts on the split? Affect the attorneys at all?

Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
I'd be a lot more hesitant in taking the job now. These kinds of splits usually involve massive lay-offs, and the GC's office is easy to outsource to firms so it may be a target. If you're considering an HP offer and have other options, you should ask HP a lot of hard questions.goden wrote:Thoughts on the split? Affect the attorneys at all?

Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
This is what it was when I applied last year. 150K sounds really high. I'm In-house at a bigger company than Hp and our junior lawyers (1-3 exp) start at 120 - 130K.Anonymous User wrote:Two years ago it was $115,000 plus a $15,000 signing bonus. While it might have increased since then, $150,000 sounds too high.

It's 150 I was told repeatedly by people during interview and it's in my offer letter

Re: Hewlett-Packard starting salary - new grads
Considering they just upped their layoff target to 55,000 employees, it's likely to be $0. I can't imagine they maintain their legal hiring in the midst of splitting into two companies and laying off tens of thousands of employees.
