Reviving this thread. I received a call from a recruiter there today for an in house position.

I'm wondering if the same vibe still exists in the legal department as expressed above. I've heard from several people that they've been trying to change the culture (at least in the legal group), but am curious if it has actually happened.

Thank you.

I've been contacted multiple times by their recruiters and was invited to a potential hire reception (didn't go). My sense is that their work culture has not changed that much, and that part of the reason they are doing such aggressive hiring is because of their burn and churn model.

It really depends on who you work under. Some groups are better than others. However as a whole, it is just as much work as biglaw. Your pay is reflective of that as well. There are some sr counsel that make more than biglaw associates of the same year.

I went through the interview halfway before accepting a different job. I just didn't get a good vibe out of the people I was interviewing with.

Just wanted to throw this article in the mix if you're thinking about it: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/tech ... place.html

and this: https://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/08/25 ... tudy-says/

I've heard general impressions are that it's still that it's pretty bad to work there but the one associate I know who left for there seemed to be enjoying it when I spoke with her a few months after she started. Though I'm not sure she is a great example because she was a workaholic.

The recruiter told me that this is not the case. She said incoming corporate counsel make $150k-153k a year with a small cash bonus, so I would be taking a $100k haircut at my level.

From what I have read their options come with a two year cliff (instead of one) with other restrictions that are not-typical.

No it's not much different (I was an SWE there so all my friends there are SWEs, but if they still treat their SWEs and their warehouse employees like shit, I can't imagine the lawyers are doing much better). Their kind of dysfunction is impossible to change overnight (probably needs a few more "generations" of management who are all actively interested in change before any change will actually happen).

Amazon is still doing a lot of cool things you won't see in other companies, which is why for many it's still worth a pit stop before they move onto a company with a nicer corporate culture. If it's worth it financially, stay there a couple years and then work really hard to move on. But I wouldn't expect the culture there to be any better than what you're getting in biglaw (if anything it'll probably be worse, with less fringe benefits than what you are likely accustomed to in biglaw). I remember in my interviews for Amazon it was pointed out with pride that my first desk was going to be an old door of someone's office (I'd get to pick it out myself!); maybe they've added some benefits since I was there, but in case they didn't, don't expect a company like this to be paying for happy hours, business trips, nice work iPhones, meals, car service, etc.
