I just spent the day interviewing law students, and the ones I liked the best were the ones who came across as genuine and honest. BS canned answers are a real turn-off. And yes, I recognize that "Why NYC" is a stupid question - it's not one I ask. But as a student, you can't choose your questions. And no matter how stupid the question, you're better off not giving a BS canned answer.oblig.lawl.ref wrote:When I OCI'd last year lying to get cbs was in vogue due to a certain interviewing guide that was stickied and revered. It totally fucked me. I almost struck out. Since then and part way through the interviewing process I converted to a not lying policy that has served me well. I may spin things on the edges but I do not bold faced BS. I have gotten like 5x the cbs that way.
To the point of the thread I normally talk about the quality of the work--because I'm into corp and that's believable. In a lot of ways it is better in NYC than anywhere else if you're into that.

Man why are people so fucking down on NYC on here all the time?
OP should just be honest. But -- and this is the part people seem to fuck up -- spin your honest answer in a way people want to hear. "I just want to get a job" becomes "Corporate law is so much stronger here than in the place where I grew up that doesn't smell like garbage four months a year."
You can't go wrong with honesty, so long as you take the kernel of truth that's in there and phrase it in a context-appropriate way.

I don't really remember specifically but just little lies like--I've always wanted to go to NYC, I'm not interviewing in any other markets, I'm also interested in litigation. Stuff like that. I'm referring to this advice:mephistopheles wrote:mephistopheles wrote:oblig.lawl.ref wrote: When I OCI'd last year lying to get cbs was in vogue due to a certain interviewing guide that was stickied and revered. THIS IS A SHOCK TO SOME, BUT EIP IS A BIG EXERCISE IN LYING AND DODGING THE TRUTH: The firms want genius, driven, type A people who they can work into the ground for 5-7 years then discard. The students want to be rich but couldn’t be bothered to study medicine, engineering, etc. This is all a big exercise in bullshit on all sides, so if this is not the type of person you are… well, get over it, if you want a job. Imagine “what is the ideal answer I could get from a candidate on question X” – and then parrot that, not the truth.

It was an HLS EIP guide posted on here; a lot of HLS people quickly took issue with it.oblig.lawl.ref wrote:I don't really remember specifically but just little lies like--I've always wanted to go to NYC, I'm not interviewing in any other markets, I'm also interested in litigation. Yeah this sounds like terrible advice. Honestly if you need a guide to tell you how to lie, you aren't likely to be very convincing at it.wert3813 wrote:It was an HLS EIP guide posted on here; a lot of HLS people quickly took issue with it.oblig.lawl.ref wrote: I don't really remember specifically but just little lies like--I've always wanted to go to NYC, I'm not interviewing in any other markets, I'm also interested in litigation.
