I was T-14, pretty much everyone had the grades to get in the door to biglaw unless they had seriously bad marks.BrokenMouse wrote:grades in law school that got you in the door to biglaw?
But this thread is not about biglaw, it is about shitlawyering.

The shittiest part of shitlaw is having to constantly chase down money that clients owe you. In this Stiches has proved to be an invaluable inspiration.rickgrimes69 wrote:what is the shittiest part of shitlaw

The least shitty part is that I'm a real lawyer. A consumer case worth a few grand is much more fascinating than being the 100th guy on a multi-billion dollar lawsuit.
Also, believe it or not some of my cases are quite intellectually challenging. Perhaps this is because of one of the specialized niches in which I practice.

Have you ever thought about firing yourself and if so, how would you do it? Would you go w the "what are your career goals/plans" talk to yourself or would you opt for the 'ol walk in your office and realize that you moved your desktop & dual monitors out to the street curb before lunch play

I'd probably insult building securitys' mother and get hauled out with a black eye and a broken nose. Got to do these things in style. Besides, I'm a shitlawyer, got to do set up a lawsuit. Either that or I'd sexually harass myself then quit.oblitigate wrote:Have you ever thought about firing yourself and if so, how would you do it? Real office with prestigious address. And not any of that Regis shit.Desert Fox wrote:Real office or "virtual office"
Actually, the big clients don't give a shit if you work from home. Its the personal injury type folks that you sort of need it for. That and you also need it to work part time people out of and keep files. Also other lawyers take you more seriously. Because lawyers are stupid prestige whores.

You can save a lot in a short time in biglaw if you live frugally and stack cash instead of throwing $ at loans.Br3v wrote:Where'd you get the $ to open shop?

Didn't pay sticker but still owe six figs. Loan payments are negligible (and I'm in the 3 year capitalization grace period) but very depending on AGI. One of the big things I'm working on with my accountant is keeping my AGI low so that next fiscal year I don't get murdered on taxes and loan payments.BrokenMouse wrote:did you pay sticker at T14? how much is your monthly payment on loans and for how long?
Right now I'm on dat 25 year forgiveness trip. I suppose that could change if I was making huge money but I see now reason why I would put extra $ towards loans instead of cash flowing/tax reducing/revenue producing things.

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to do biglaw or PI obvi T-14. If you want to do what I'm doing full ride (grades just don't matter, no one asks). Although you will still have debt from living expenses.BrokenMouse wrote:Do u think graduating lawl school without debt is a life gamechanger? How about this scenario - full ride to T25 with shit grades with little chances at biglaw or T14 with 6 figure debt?Anonymous User wrote:Didn't pay sticker but still owe six figs. And yes, no debt is a total life gamechanger.

How did you choose what type of law to specialize in?

Specialization is for insects. Half the fun is learning new practice areas. And besides, do you really want to spend your life as the rule 36(b) dude? The shit I don't do, besides 1 specialized field where I have industry experience is stuff that you really need specialized training for like BK and tax.BullShitWithBravado wrote:How did you choose what type of law to specialize in?
I sort of want to be the "country lawyer" jack of all trades type of dude.

This speaks to me. In your first 6 months, have you discovered that this is feasible or do you worry that you will eventually have to become more specialized?Anonymous User wrote:Specialization is for insects. If anything, this is more feasible than specializing since serving one need for a client well can lead them to request that you serve another need. Also, some practice areas are cyclical. Some of the firms that got hit hardest in the recession are those that were overly dependent on one type of work.Lord Randolph McDuff wrote:This speaks to me. Also, the social groups that give one type of work are not the same as those who give another so serving areas needed by different economic groups allows you to broaden your base of potential clients. There really is more room in the bottom of the market. You wouldn't believe, for instance, how often I've been asked for a referral to a family or immigration lawyer.
That being said, I'm making a special effort to get buisness in a few areas where there are increasing returns to volume or that are especially profitable for me

You actually take calls from pro se parties? That leads me to my question: do you have a secretary?Anonymous User wrote:Shitlaw update. Just got an irate call from an opposing pro se. Wants to sue me for pain and suffering I caused by suing him.
A second question is whether you do criminal law?
