I'd say contact recruiting directly. What are you going to say to the alum from your 1L?
wanted to reach out in order to hopefully set up a meeting to discuss their practice area at the firm
I'm still gonna say you'd be better off contacting recruiting for two reasons: 1) there won't be that awkward "i'm contacting you because you're an alum... of the school I'm leaving..." vibe 2) with your grades, it may be best to just try to get an interview/callback right now

Yes. You should have been doing this already to learn about firms and practice areas. There is nothing wrong with this.
