Considering you're looking for something narrow just put it in your cover letter, front and center. If anyone wants you for that, they'll bite.Anonymous User wrote:Hi everyone,
OP here.
I was just wondering because I was fielding various V20 offers after OCI. I had no corporate/finance experience, so I just picked the one who's best practice group sounded sexiest. After 2L, I realize that I'd like to practice in a different department than the said sexy department. I was just wondering what my chances are at switching to a different firm where their strengths lie more with my interests. Haven't gotten grades back for this semester yet, but T14, top 30% so far, LR.
Anyways, thanks for all of your responses. Although, I'm still not really sure how I find out. I guess just shoot them my resume and transcript and see if I get any bites, and hope they're hiring for the department I want to work in?

There are at least two people ITT who need to shut the fuck up.
OP, I think your stats are right on the borderline for a lot of firms. For example, my firm is only hiring people in the top 25% from some of the lower T14s this year. The top 25% cutoff is for 2Ls, however, so I'm not sure if there's a higher cutoff for 3Ls (although I understand that my firm generally uses the same cutoffs for all junior-level associates/law students).

Haha. You're right. Sorry for hijacking the thread OP. No more comments from me.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:There are at least two people ITT who need to shut the fuck up.

OP again. Thanks for the info. So hopefully I did well this semester, and I'll concentrate on getting an offer from the firm I'm with this summer; best case scenario is I like the work they are good at and don't want to switch, but if not, it can't hurt to just give other firms a shot.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:There are at least two people ITT who need to shut the fuck up.

Should I just be mass-mailing places, or is there a specific avenue 3Ls go through? And should I just be calling/emailing hte recruiting department to see if/what departments they are hiring for?
Thanks again everyone.

I had just about identical stats. If you comb back through my comment history, there a number of 3L hiring advice posts that talk about mailing etc. Don't have time to find them myself right now. Also feel free to PM.Anonymous User wrote:OP again. Thanks for the info. Cravath or S&C I forget which says this to everyone. Several of the V10 say this to people who turn down offers. Those firms still don't *want* or *plan* to hire 3L's. They leave the option open to do so because their needs might pick up or more people leave to clerk than they project. Between them, they reliably hand out at least a few offers.Anonymous User wrote:Why wouldn't they? They get to hire a first year without having to pay them 30k over the summer.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:I don't think firms *want* to hire 3Ls in the sense that they purposely plan to hire 3Ls, so my statement is accurate from an ex ante perspective. Sometimes they hire 3Ls, but it's usually because one or more of their former 2L SAs leave or business needs change.Anonymous User wrote:This is not true in my personal experience with a V20.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:A lot of firms post openings on their websites. Nobody wants to hire 3Ls, though. Sorry.
In other news, I need to be castrated for using the words "ex ante" in an Internet forum.
Anyway, again in my personal experience with a V20 -- after rejecting me after a callback they told me (in writing) that they would be very interested in employment after graduation--in other words interview as a 3L. Does this meet your definition of "purposely plan to hire 3Ls"? (Also I think the word you are looking for is purposefully)
