Maybe it's more of an east coast thing? In CA I could see some people giving a backpack weird looks, but it wouldn't be so bad that I would tell someone they should replace their backpack with a shoulder bag.Regulus wrote:I haven't actually worked at a law firm yet, but at my job before law school (at the North American corporate headquarters of a Fortune Global 500), it was biz casual with jeans Fridays, so it wasn't as "formal" as a law firm setting. Even then, only one guy brought a backpack to work, and I overheard management complaining about how unprofessional it looked one time. It is kind of douchey if your boss cares about what you transport your shit in if you're just going to be around coworkers, yet it still happens; I can see it being frowned upon even more if there is a chance that you will interact with clients.

It looks unprofessional and it makes you look like a student. You look like a doofus.bk1 wrote:Really?Desert Fox wrote:I don't doubt it. Get a bag.
I don't think it'll fly in the west either, but it really won't fly in NYC. Don't some firms consider business casual "a suit without a tie"?

I don't disagree that it does look a bit unprofessional, I just don't think it's so strong that, at least in CA, it should necessitate changing bags. But yeah, my "they won't care" comment was definitely overstating it.Desert Fox wrote:It looks unprofessional and it makes you look like a student. You look like a doofus.

It doesn't have to be a fancy briefcase. I'm rocking some cheap canvas bag I got for 20 bucks on amazon. You can change the bag and it's still likely to be the cheapest part of your ensemble.bk1 wrote:I don't disagree that it does look a bit unprofessional, I just don't think it's so strong that, at least in CA, it should necessitate changing bags. Re: Random Question - Bags
I work in an NYC firm that is known for being more on the conservative side as far as dress and social atmosphere, and I don't think I have seen anyone wearing a backpack. I doubt anyone would care or mind, but I guess it runs the risk of looking a bit unprofessional. I bring a duffel bag with me on many days (since I hit the gym right after work most days), and I've never been concerned that it may not be fancy, though on the rest of the days, I just bring a simple messenger bag. I think its probably a good idea to have a basic messenger bag, since its an all-purpose thing that always looks professional. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive.

For whatever reason I have always thought of Coach as a ladies store. But I think this one is fine for guys too….BVest wrote:I like the Coach 5266 personally....

Re: Random Question - Bags
I work in house at a bank, and I think this is acceptable, but a back pack is awkward. I often times bring a huge tote with running clothes since I run home, and I see men with bags for gym clothes. I work with 1 guy who uses a backpack, and he also wears khakis. It's NAGL.Anonymous User wrote:I work in an NYC firm that is known for being more on the conservative side as far as dress and social atmosphere, and I don't think I have seen anyone wearing a backpack. Stop over-thinking. I have a saddleback briefcase and am a first year. It's huge and probably too much, but no one really notices except for saying "sweet bag".
