Making lots of money =/= working in biglaw. I'm talking about working in biglaw. What exactly do you think I'm bitter about?manu6926 wrote:Some people would like that sort of work. Plus, most people like making lots of money.
I just sense pessimism and bitterness here.

What are you talking about? I'm talking about people LIKING to work in BIGLAW. You are talking about something else.Hipster but Athletic wrote:What if someone is in their third year of law school, has accumulated a lot of debt, has summered in "biglaw", and wants to "work in biglaw for a while" so as to pay off their debt as quickly as possible and to put themselves in a position where they could work in a different, less taxing position in a few years? They are incorrect about this? Is the reason they are incorrect because no matter the benefits, having to work with a bunch of cryptic, pompous, whiney assholes for any amount of time not worth it?

Oh, you don't know what the phrase "I'd like to" means. Gotcha. That's on you, but at least you weren't being pompous.
Classic "I will like doing" vs. "I would like to" mixup. Just try to sound it out a little better next time.

And people who say "I would like to [do something]" usually say this because... why? Because they view it as a necessary chore they have to complete to get somewhere? No, not really.

Because some people don't have the luxury of turning down the highest paying job they could ever hope to obtain in their twenties with zero relevant work experience? Lol at you guys for becoming so jaded and deluded that you've forgotten the appeal of going to a big law firm in the first place. Take a walk in the Vale thread.Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:Nice straw man.Hipster but Athletic wrote:Oh, you don't know what the phrase "I'd like to" means. Gotcha. Pretty much everyone said this 3L. Now, out of my class of 2012 friends, I know maybe one person who would say that. She hates her job, sure, and would happily murder a couple people in her department if she could get away with it, but she was psychotic enough of a gunner that she's hanging on. Otherwise I'm hearing: "what am I doing here?" "I put in my notice." "With IBR I could..."Dr. Filth wrote:i'd love to about whatever prompted this, iafg

I got scholarship from American University law school. And of course, I will work really really hard to be in the top 10% of my class. After paying off my debt by working several years in big law, I will jump to a mid law to do what I like------ENTERTAINMENT LAW!! It has always been my dream to negotiate contracts for hollywood hotshots.
Even if my plan does work out, I am not against becoming partner in a biglaw.

Grass is always greener. With a decent but not impressive GPA in a BA/BFA from a decent but not impressive school, the amount of shady stuff that would either get you disbarred or at least make you hate yourself as a lawyer that you need to do to make rent, and maybe eat out 1-2 times a week do you know what the appeal of big law is? Even if it only paid 600 a week for 60 hours a week, you are getting 600 and you are in doors! Have you ever worked outside in 20 degree weather for 12 hours at a time with no medical insurance when you get sick? I haven't started my job yet, but I am grateful. If you get good grades and are nice you get 160k and yearly raises. I'd like to grow and build my career and use the law for good, but I am fucking grateful for the opportunity they gave me. Maybe you guys have other options, maybe you've forgotten how much it sucks to be poor but I'm fucking grateful to make a lot of money in a heated building, and don't have to do anything sketchy (we probably define sketchy differently) for my boss to do it. They pay you 6 figures, develop you as a lawyer and give you health insurance. All you do is work long hours and get yelled at. Omg he or she said your work product was shit and you're an idiot, and that your Brooks Brothers suit is so 2008. Your life is so hard.

Re: "I'd like to work in biglaw for a while..."
I would say I did one really dumb thing: never asking an associate at a large law firm what they actually did day-to-day in a typical month. Like what it actually meant to "file a motion" or "review documents." The only thing I really understood going in (frankly, even after my summer) was what it's like to do and report on legal research.

It's the amount of work, number of hours, and deadlines which make the job so bad in general. It's the people, the bosses, the assholes, who make it absolutely toxic for some people. If you happen to work for an asshole, you are just fucked.
One of the more sadistic aspects of the job is the billable hours requirement. It's not the amount, though 2000 is too high, it's that it doesn't take into account downtime. Firm only has 50 hours of work for you in March? Better hope you have a great April. It's shitty, and makes you worry when you aren't busy. So it sucks to be busy, and sucks to be slow.

Those that find jobs that they truly enjoy are the actual winners... the rest are just cogs on the wheel and have to wait until our obligations are satisfied to be able to do the things that we enjoy ( but are probably too tired to actually enjoy them). And when the cog is no longer there, the job will be there- and a new cog will replace you will be forgotten within days...
