I have flown to three events without the firm paying. It sucks... but you have to. Two of them did not turn positive for me, and one of them in particular was shitty. Recruiter had forgotten to mention to security or the interviewing partners that I was coming, and the rejection letter came to my mail three days later after the interview... but I guess it is the market.
