These numbers would be more useful if people also posted their sex and ethnicity. Just sayin...

I am a 2L at a Tier 3 school. I got one offer from a well-known federal congressional agency for a summer associate position which, ostensibly, turns into a full-time job after graduation. I am in the top 28%. I am not on a law journal/review. I am not on moot court. Nor do I participate in any student groups/organizations.

Good luck to everyone, and if you put your mind to it you will get the job you are looking for.

Did you have govt experience 1l year? If you don't mind, what do you think made you stand out in the interview?
I was a music major which was always a good talking point for interviews, and I still perform in the DC area (honestly this probably didn't help much and just served as an ice-breaker).

My 1L summer internship was in a Chief Counsel office in a sub-agency of a large secretary-level department. It gave me A LOT of experience as to substantive regulatory enforcement/compliance (which is what I was doing mostly), government disclosure statutes, appropriations law, personnel removal actions resulting in attorney's fee awards and making sure there was no duplicative billing (to save agency money), etc.

Summer Associate Honors Programs are looking for substantive "general counsel" experience in disclosure (i.e. FOIA), employment law (cases before the MSPB), appropriations, and whatever else needs to be done to tackle legal issues associated with running a federal agency properly.

Thank-you notes sent: Emails. Sent to most people, personalized
Notes: I was shocked at my results. I think that interviewing skills are very underrated.

Hey BK - is there a way for us to access the results of the Google survey? Or do we have to wait until you release the data? Curious to see how everyone is doing.

Thanks

I've updated OP to include it. Right now there are about 170 responses and it will self update. I'll go through a month from now and clean up the data so that it's uniform (e.g. make sure that people are using the same) as well as compile it in some useful subforms (e.g. so that people can look at a sheet that has just T14 or just people aiming Boston).

That's why I included a checkbox that says "Other" and allows you to fill in anything you wish that you think was a factor.

If you expect many many more responses it might be worth editing the form to have explicit checkboxes for race/sex/orientation. Wouldn't get those who've already responded but better than no good data on that at all.

School: T25
Rank: top 20-25% (much closer to 20)
Target Markets: TX, NYC
WE: None
IP: No
Law Review: Secondary
Mass Mail Applications: 0
CBs offered from mass mail: 0
OCI Screener Interviews offered: 22
OCI Screeners Accepted: 22
CB from OCI: 6
Total CB offered: 6
CB Accepted: 6
Dings (post CB): 4 (V20, V30, V50, NLJ100 non-vault)
Offers: 1 (V50); still waiting to hear about second half from V100.
Accepted: V50
Notes: I feel that I've outperformed my numbers. I attribute this to true energy and enthusiasm for both law and business, a kind and genuine (non-petulant) personality, b-school experience, and possibly my ethnicity. If I was to do everything again, I would have MM'd and started MM'ing during mid-late July; I relied on OCI WAY too much. No mock interviews/OCS interaction and no WE/interview experience, so I may have gotten lucky.
Thank You Notes: Sent for almost all screeners, sent to recruiters for most CB's, sent to every attorney from the firm that offered me (granted, I felt I really connected with many of them)

Ethnicity: Non-URM minority from currently valuable area, more than one foreign language
Gender: Male
UG: B-school

I'm generally skeptical that those things can provide a substantial boost outside of the ability to do diversity fairs and get more screeners (which is reflected in the number of screeners anyways). Though I could be wrong on that front.

At this point I'm loathe to mess with it and add more options since it'll skew it (and I'm unsure if messing with the form will mess with the spreadsheet as well). There's an other box for people to add stuff they think might have helped.

Suggestion for the worksheet, but is it possible to have the header (i.e. the line that lists the categories) break from the rest, so we can scroll down without wondering what numbers/data we are looking at? Thanks for putting this together!

I've frozen the first line in the spreadsheet but I don't think it works in the published version.

School: HYS
Market(s): DC
Approximate class rank: top third
Law review: secondary journal
Work experience: 1 year
IP background: No
Anything else that might have an impact? Not really
Screening Interviews: 26
Mass mail Interviews: mailed about 5 places, resulted in 1 screener
Callbacks received: 1
Callbacks accepted: 1
Offers w/vault ranges: V60
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback? 1 from OCI, 3 from mailings
Thank-you notes sent: A couple sent to OCI screeners that I thought went well (erroneously, apparently, since they all ended in rejections)
Notes: I have no idea what went wrong - did mock interviews with random attorneys and OCS and they had only positive things to say, and said my resume was great (I think it's a little PI heavy). Anyway, all it takes is one offer, and I'm happy with where I'm going.

Screening Interviews: 16
Mass mail Interviews: 4
Callbacks received: 10 (7 from OCI, 3 from mass mail)
Callbacks accepted: 8
Offers w/vault ranges: 1 V30 in NY, 1 V100 in NY, 2 large regional in home secondary...waiting on a V20, a V70, and a non-Vault NYC I did last week but will probably just withdraw from them. So far only 1 rejection.
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback? I think only one post-screener.
Thank-you notes sent: 1 email to a guy I really connected with (from V20 I haven't heard from, and he didn't email me back). I also don't know if I'd call it a thank you as much as an "It was nice to meet you, I hope we can keep in touch because you're cool"
Bumping myself with complete results: 5 offers = 1 V30 NYC, 1 V100 NYC, 1 regional market in NYC, 2 large regional in home secondary. Accepted at V100. Very satisfied with the whole process.

School: T14
Market(s): Chicago, broader midwest
Approximate class rank: Top 33%
Law review: No, secondary journal
Work experience: Yes
IP background: No
Anything else that might have an impact? Very odd Resume, several post-grad degrees, told I'm a good interviewer
Screening Interviews: 23
Mass mail Interviews: 1
Callbacks received: 1 in Chicago, 3 in MW
Callbacks accepted: 1
Offers w/vault ranges: 1, V20
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback? Haven't tracked this
Thank-you notes sent: 10+

I think I underperformed my numbers, even largely targeting Chicago. Probably should've put more firms who like non-traditional/interesting backgrounds and had more confidence with that, ended up with a lot of grade competitive+small class size firms at OCI. Offer was in Chicago and received before other CBs, with no other Chicago options on horizon, I accepted and withdrew from others.

Thought about posting this nonanonymously so people could PM questions about my targeted market, firm, school, etc., but figured i'd just get slapped with "humblebrag" posts. So if anyone wants to ask me a question or anything, feel free to post here and I would be happy to PM you.

School: HLS
Market(s): LA (primary), SF (secondary)
Approximate class rank: Probably within the top 5%
Law review: Yes
Work experience: None
IP background: No
Anything else that might have an impact? 1L SA
Screening Interviews: 21 (for purposes of this form, i'll treat Quinn Emanuel as falling within the "OCI" category)
Callbacks received: 16
Callbacks accepted: 8
Offers w/ vault ranges: 7 (1 V10, 2 V15, 1 V20, 1 V25, 1 V40, 1 non-Vault ranked boutique)
How many firms just didn't get back with you with a rejection/callback? 1 firm post callback didn't get back to me in a timely manner, so I accepted at my top choice without waiting for an answer.
Accepted: V40
Thank-you notes sent: None
Notes: Vault rankings are meaningless, especially outside of New York. No thank you notes (I am very skeptical these help).
