Spoke to a biglaw NYC partner the other day. He said basically no firms would look at 3Ls til they locked down their next SA class.

Re: firms that are hiring 3Ls
I've heard this from a lot of lawyers. This makes it particularly frustrating for people looking to change firms or markets because, by the time anyone is willing to interview them, they will have already had to respond to their summer offer.Anonymous User wrote:Spoke to a biglaw NYC partner the other day. I would love more info about this. Do you know this through OCI or mass-mailing? What practice group? Thanks.Anonymous User wrote:Labaton

Milbank NYC posted on our symplicity board that they are looking for 3Ls for an associate position. So did Ashurst and Bredhoff Kaiser

It doesn't specify a group. I wonder if milbank no offered people this summer and are now looking for more people or if they just under-hired.
Even though it does not specify which group, I would not apply there saying you are open to anything. I think it is safer, especially as a 3L, to specify interest in a particular group with a good reason that shows that you have thought about. It is risky IMO to specify interest in the firm's premier subgroup bc it is likely that that is already oversubscribed by people who summered there and got offers. OTOH, if that is where most of the revenue comes from, that may be where they need bodies. At this point, corp or lit is enough anyway.
ETA: Bredhoff Kaiser appears to be an employment firm and it looks like they might only be hiring an associate for a one year stint. They also mentioned that they will hire six or seven SAs but only offer two or three.

Re: firms that are hiring 3Ls
FYI: Milbank apparently intends to double their New York summer class this year, from roughly 30 in 2012 to 60 in 2013 (while remaining close to 100% offer rates). It certainly seems like they're consciously expanding-- whether this is a good thing or not depends on your POV.

Re: firms that are hiring 3Ls
Securities shareholders ltg. is their bread and butter but they also have M&A ltg. and antitrust departments. Reason why I ask is because the securities law group doesn't like to hire people out of ls, and the few they do hire summered there. I thought maybe this was for their new Dodd-Frank whistle-blower practice or something. Just surprised is all.anon168 wrote:Labaton basically has one practice group.Anonymous User wrote:I would love more info about this. Do you know this through OCI or mass-mailing? What practice group? Re: firms that are hiring 3Ls
My school has a job listing for 3Ls at Milbank that says they're open to all practice areas, but that of course might be mistaken information. If you're a 3L looking for a job or even looking to trade up, I see no reason you shouldn't send over a resume.

Kirkland & Ellis (NY) and Bryan Cave (not sure which offices) are also looking for IP 3Ls

Any more info on this?Anonymous User wrote:I was told IP Transactional.Anonymous User wrote:Yup - one practice area. I've been told by multiple people that Kirkland is not doing general 3L hiring (although I have heard mention that they might be doing some very light 3L recruiting for a specific practice area).
What practice group are they hiring for at Kirkland Chicago?
I heard Real Estate (in other words, one of the least interesting groups at the firm), but I could be wrong.

Stock?
Unfortunately, we are not able to pursue your application for an associate position at this time. You have a highly impressive background, however, and we will keep your resume on file, as we may develop additional needs over the next few months.

Bump. I applied to quite a few firms listed here and haven't heard anything.
