Why did you decide to go to school in Georgia? I know the market in California is terribly depressed, any chance you might try anther state?

To be perfectly honest, I chose Georgia because they offered me in-state tuition, and I love Athens. It wound up being very cheap and it was fairly close to home. If I had gotten into unc, I would have gone there. at the end of the process, it was down to wustl and uga. Uga wound up being slightly less expensive (I got a very flattering scholarship offer from wustl), and I didn't really like st Louis, so I went to Georgia.

I loved living in Athens and I met my wife there. No regrets.

Mostly because I was born and raised in NC, I'm barred in NC, all my work experience as an attorney is in NC, all my work experience before becoming an attorney is in NC, and because I want to live and work in NC.

I could look for work in Georgia, but I would really have to pass the Georgia bar first. Ive thought about that, especially because my in laws are in Georgia and I obviously have a uga degree, but Im not sure how much better I would do there. Firms like it when their candidates have ties to the area and have shown a commitment to being there. Aside from that, all of my family is in north carolina. I wouldn't feel right about leaving until my grandmother dies. If I lt like I had a better shot at getting a legal job by moving to another state, I would....but I don't.

I get leads wherever I can. Thhe local bar has been really supportive and I'm really thankful for them. I had lunch with the newest district court judge today, and he gave me some good ideas I hadn't considered before. I just try to reach out to other attorneys I know, but it hasn't translated into a job. I've had some friends send some work my way (stuff like a bill of sale for a car, little 80 dollar fees and whatnot).

When I locate an opening, I apply for it. I rarely am privy to information concerning how many people apply for the job, although my last interview is an exception. I interviewed for an ADA job, and my interviewer let me know that over 150 people applied, and she was interviewing 27 people in the first round.

Sorry I think I misread something you wrote about Nor Cal as being Northern California! And I think you mentioned living in the pool house, so I thought that was California. Sorry about that. Also, I always thought you were a woman, so I am misreading you all over the place

Good luck with finding something. I think it might be worth it to look other places, but if you are determined to stay home, maybe you can see what kinds of non-JD jobs are out there. This is really a tough situation.

When I entered LS I figured my [imaginary] BigLaw firm would pick up the tab and select the state. As reality sets it and going it alone to the bar becomes a possibility. . . what is that like? Mainly in terms of studying time, stress, $$ and the wait to hear if you passed/failed. Anything else you can add that is helpful, is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm looking for non attorney work in other states. I don't really know what other career to move into. I can't really look for lawyer jobs in other states (aside from federal stuff) because I'm not licensed in other states. I'm considering taking the February bar somewhere else, but I'm not 100% on that. It's so damn expensive. It's hard to be optimistic that I'll have any success anywhere else, given the fact that I am striking out here, where all of my connections and experience lie.

I got a rejection letter today from the Ada job. I really wanted it. I'm thinking about just stepping away from all of this and getting a job waiting tables at the mall or something. I feel absolutely beaten.

Studying for the bar is basically just how you would expect. It's a grind, but it's really not a difficult test as long as you prepare.you basically answered your own question. You study a lot, it's stressful, it's expensive, and waiting to hear if you pass or fail is nerve wracking. It's just like trial work.

What happened to your job at the family law place?

Long story. Basically, my boss got really sick and was in the hospital for months. she hired an efficiency expert who recommended that she downsize the firm as sort of a first step towards getting ready to retire. Half the staff was cut, as was I since I didn't have my own book - I had been working on her overflow cases and smaller child support/custody stuff while she concentrated on our biggest clients. She had two partners who also left.

I got the job. It only pays 45k, which is 10 less than what I made at my previous firm job a year+ ago, but I had to take it so I did. I'm just really glad to have a job. I'm a little scared to move (lived where I am now for basically my whole life except law school). Thanks for the well wishes, TLS!
