Is there any trade-up potential from a boutique (non-IP)? Struck out at big firms in OCI, scored SA at a sick boutique but the pay is like $80k/yr, I'm worried after the summer I might decide being crazy rich is more important than having a cool job. The boutique is good and has a killer practice, but it's not anywhere whose name you'd recognize without looking it up first.

The money would be a good reason to trade-up.

The fact you can't name drop at law school mixers is not a good reason.

It is a solid small firm, I just don't want people thinking its Susman Godfrey or anything (although the off market salary could have been a clue).

I am thinking of trying to do this as well, partially bc I really don't like the location of my firm and partially bc I've suddenly become a great student, but I'm going to wait and see how this summer goes first.

It's worth trying, but remember that at most schools, clinics and upper level seminars almost always deviate from the curve, so a huge number of people become "better." And, even if you do become better, firms have already had their pick of people from your year, so you have to somehow outshine the great people from the year after you as well.
