Re: How to Succeed as a Summer Associate
Why would anybody possibly care if every firm cold-offers someone? This seems like such a silly concern. I gotta weigh in with FP on this one HETP3B.
BTW, you realize once you get an offer, you can still be fired or laid off, right? Real world is a bitch.

Either way, seems like a ridiculously hard claim to prove. Why would anybody possibly care if every firm cold-offers someone?
I know my firm didn't cold offer anyone because they all returned as permanent associates.

Re: How to Succeed as a Summer Associate
Discussion during an OCI / callback interview after we've both loosened up a little bit:
**general discussion about the summer-associate experience**
Me: "Does something like that come up when they're reviewing at the end of the summer how the person did?"
Interviewer: "No. Pretty much the only rule of being a summer associate is don't be an idiot."
Me: "Haha. Is there anything that sticks out in your mind as something a summer associate did that completely dumbfounded you, to the point of thinking they were an 'idiot,'?"
Interviewer: "Eh, there was this one summer associate who was on a boat ride on the Hudson. She got a little too drunk, took off her dress, stripped down to her underwear, and jumped into the water."
Me: "Wow."
Interviewer: "Yeah.....I guess she still got an offer though. That's what I mean."

That was at Cleary during the boom years. Not trying to out you, but that incident was pretty well publicized on ATL. Jonas Blank at Skadden also received an offer, again during the boom years. Since it was during the boom years, I don't really take it as indicative.

Interview was with two associates. Both of them were in the room at that time. Both said it was an associate with their firm. A different (non-Cleary) V10 firm.Fresh Prince wrote:...there is another Aqua Girl (tm)!?!??!??!!Helmholtz wrote:Interview was not with Cleary though....Fresh Prince wrote:That was at Cleary during the boom years. The stories suggest there were in fact two aqua girls: one who *fell* into the water and one who stripped and jumped (the non-cleary girl.) lore has it that the one who jumped handed her dress to a partner before jumping.

Re: How to Succeed as a Summer Associate
Here are some more:
Don't complain ever about anything. Whatever you say will get back to people.
Finish work early if at all possible.
Be extremely organized about everything. Keep your files, desk, work organized as humanly possible. If you are not naturally organized, learn how.
Be very nice to and patient with all support staff. Losing patience will hurt you.
Stay calm under pressure.
Proofread your work at least twice before handing it in.
Check in halfway through a project and make sure you are on the right track.

Re: How to Succeed as a Summer Associate
I've heard countless stories from associates/partners on how support staff is everything to making it in biglaw. Pissing off secretaries/paralegals can lead to them really screwing you over when you need them in your most desperate times, or saving your ass and pulling out miracles for you if you treated them well.sunynp wrote:Here are some more:
