Boston firms, anyone? Ropes/Wilmer/Goodwin?
Yeah, G. T. L. Rev., I know it's irrational, but I'd still rather know.

3L buddy of mine said that grades were asked for towards the end of the summer and that he says the summer before his someone was no-offered because of it, and that this summer apparently two people were cold offered because of grades, or so he says.Anonymous User wrote:linklaters anyone?

A DPW recruiter told me they aren't even allowed to not offer a person. I wouldn't use DPW as a standard.Anonymous User wrote:Davis Polk had us fill out a form 2L spring year which authorized them to request a transcript directly from our law school. Aside from that, grades were never mentioned at any time. If I were a betting man I would say they didn't look. It certainly didn't factor into offer decisions.
However, a Dean at NW said that he hasn't heard of someone getting dinged for anything other than D's and F's.

Unless the incoming summer associates received extended employment contracts, why would the firm not be at liberty to decline extending an offer? Even once you are hired, you can (in theory at least) be terminated.Desert Fox wrote:

Not allowed by their own rule. They want that 100% offer rate statistic. You'd have to whip your dick out at a firm event to not get an offer. And even then, I think they'd cold offer.Bramwell wrote:Unless the incoming summer associates received extended employment contracts, why would the firm not be at liberty to decline extending an offer? I can't vouch for the accuracy, but that is what the interviewer said. Could be lying, but they weren't trying to sweet talk me cause I got dinged from the screener.

Sidley NY anyone?
not the most grade-conscious firm, so i'm not too worried, but i think it's always best to CYA in situations where a job offer is on the line.

Please, stop bumping this thread with random firm names. There are no documented cases of a firm having a system in place to no-offer SA's due to grades. If it happens, it's on a case-by-case basis, in which case there would be a multitude of factors involved, and any such case would be so rare (and the no-offer itself probably so cryptic) that discussing it here would give you no useful information whatsoever. If you want more information, search the forum, but for the love of God, let this abomination of a thread die already.

No one is asking for firms with a "system in place" to no-offer SAs because of their grades. Can you imagine how unbelievably stupid any firm would be to have a documented system to no-hire people based on their grades?!sebastian0622 wrote:Please, stop bumping this thread with random firm names. Asking if a firm looks at 2L grades =/= trying to figure out if there is some kind of secret system in place to no-offer based on grades. Of course we all know there are other things factoring into no-offers.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to know if your firm looks at grades. Every 2L I've spoken to in person about this wants to know. Sebastian, if you don't like this thread, no one is putting a gun to your head & forcing you to read it. Bye.

I'll probably be working in fast food after graduation, and I am sure they'll be impressed that I went to law school in the first place and not even care about grades.

Well yeah. I'd never even consider asking a current associate whether or not they check grades...which is why I'm hoping a 3L who works at the firm I'll be at this summer will step up and say if he/she was asked for 2L grades. It's the internet & the firm is probably never going to find out you did something as invidious as telling a 2L the firm didn't ask for grades.

In my experience, they didn't give a fck and actually laughed at me for asking, kindly advising me to chill the fck out. BTW, you're not showing a lot of intelligence in this thread. Having a system isn't the same as publishing or documenting a system, and not having a system means something is cryptic and decided on a case-by-case basis, in which case this thread is worthless because nobody can comment on things that are decided on a case-by-case basis and have no predictable or persistent factors. So unless there are systems in place, you're running a worthless thread. There are no systems in place, which is why you're not getting meaningful responses, and you're approaching abuse of the anon feature by shamelessly bumping this thread and now calling me out. You should really just run a couple searches and stop being so OCD and obnoxious by repeatedly bumping this abortion of a thread with random firm names followed by question marks.

Didn't create the thread, not that it's at all relevant who created the thread in the first place. The anonymous feature in this thread is available to anyone who doesn't want to run the risk of their identity being disclosed to the firm they're working at this summer while discussing employment-related info, and as you may not have realized, there are multiple anons here.sebastian0622 wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous, your thread sucks.

Re-read your own post and you'll see who sounds unintelligent in light of what they posted here. You are telling the people in this thread to stop asking for info on which firms request 2L grades because there are no documented cases of firms having a system of no-offering people based on their grades. I replied that of course no firm has such a documented system, and that is not the information people here are seeking--rather, people want to know if their firm requests 2L grades on the off chance that their grades will be poor enough to impact their chances of getting an offer, which is not common, but which has in all likelihood happened at some point to someone.
Some isolated instances of a particular firm no-offering people based on grades does not mean there is a system in place. Firms asking for grades also doesn't mean they are going to no-offer you based on grades--it just shows they may care to some degree about their summers' 2L grades. Knowing about grade requests and no-offers is helpful and relevant to people who are planning to work at a firm this summer regardless of the existence of any system to no-offer. No one wants to be the one person in their class who was no-offered with their grades playing a factor in the decision to no-offer even in the absence of some invidious system. So just because the existence of a no-offering system based on grades in this thread will not be revealed in this thread, which it probably won't, it doesn't follow that it's worthless for people to ask if their firm asks for 2L grades.
People just want to know if their firm cares about grades or not. Why is that a problem to you?

Piping up to say 1) I benefited from this thread, have had concerns similar to OP's, am glad there's a place to talk about it 2) sebastian, if you don't like this thread, don't click on it and go be bilious elsewhere; TLS isn't a forum that exists solely for your benefit, 3) thanks to those who posted about their impressions of the impact of 2L grades at their firms. It was helpful!

In my offer letter, a 2L transcript at the end of the school year was a contingency. Sucks, because I had one fuck to give this whole semester and that went to getting a job. I have none left for exams, etc. Maybe they won't actually ask for them?
