Wearing jeans may not fly in stuffy white shoo firms, but In more down to earth places, and the west coast jeans are fine. Honestly it doesn't matter what(within limits) you wear as long as you look presentable.
In august I interviewed with 3 of the most prominent firms in a large west coast city, and saw the following outfits:
1. Middle aged partner wearning Dark Trim jeans, casual loafer/sneaker hybrids a casual button down and a corduroy jacket
2. A young associate(29-30 YO) wearing khaki pants and a polo, w/ sneakers(dunks)
3. An associate wearing a polo and jeans with VISIBLE SLEEVE/BICEP TATTOOS
4. A guy wearing black slacks, red shoes, and a bright red shirt with a black tie (kind of garrish if you ask me)
5. An older partner wearing old man clothing(pleats, loafers, etc)
6. Paralegals wearing T-shirts and jeans.
7. A bunch of boring people in button downs and slacks
8. A guy wearing a v neck sweater and slacks.
Left Coast > East Coast, as far as freedom to dress. I interviewed with several partners who said they only "play dress up" for clients.

Jeans+ button down+ blazer (or preferably tweed jacket) is your best choice.

Wore jeans and a button front. That's good because that's what they were wearing. Drank 4 Yuenglings. Thanks, TLS!
