What was the most expensive meal you tried to have reimbursed during a callback? I tried $140. Can you top that?

It can be a practice area interest (most common), or something about their compensation model, their assignment system, the office size (pretty lame), some combination, or whatever. Firms usually try to distinguish themselves on their websites, but if you're really still stuck, ask around (career services, alumni, especially ex-summers). I try to avoid "reputation," since that's usually a wash with peer firms, unless they're really a powerhouse in the market.
In all cases and at all times, never mention money or lifestyle/hours and avoid pushing pro bono unless the firm is crazy about it, and even then, soft-sell it. If I was a woman, I'd never mention anything that might hint at me starting a family. Certainly take that into account, but not in interviews.
Also, more generally, when I say "be prepared" to answer the typical questions (see earlier post), I'm really serious. It's not recognizing that they're common, it's having your best answer ready at all times. Pause, look thoughtful, break to think, vary your pace, make eye contact, look away, all to avoid sounding canned.
Firms are certainly more similar than they are different, but you still have to find the distinguishing factors and articulate a clear reason why those factors make that firm the perfect fit, hopefully with tie-ins to your resume/past experience. It's a lot easier to not sound lame or canned when you have a thoughtful tie-in to your past experience. For a quick example, I was asked "Why Skadden?" and said something (after pretending to ponder it thoughtfully) like "Skadden has a great white-collar and government investigations practice, which I really like and am looking for. While I was at XYZ Firm, I worked on a couple white collar cases [insert something specific about the case] and a big [SEC/ DOJ/whatever] investigation. It was fun because [something specific to those areas], so when I was looking at firms, Skadden really jumped out at me." Also, when talking about specific area interests, I would always preface or qualify with something like, "Obviously, I'm not certain I want to do that for a career, but I definitely have an interest in it."Anonymous User wrote:Any tips for the "so, why this firm?" question?
