Oh no doubt!!! The effect of the arduous application process and the small number of spots in the few participating divisions is that there will be a lot less applicants but the applicant pool will probably be of a higher average/median quality because only people who think they have a solid shot based on their creds bothered to go through it. Like Tax= mostly people with accounting degrees or tax-related WE, antitrust= only econ backgrounds or antitrust WE, immigration= only people who did immigration law work during 1L summer, period.

There will also be a lot of half-assed Why DOJ? and One Thing essays. How many words did y'all write for each of them? My Why DOJ was up to the word limit, but my One Thing was only like a paragraph (because it's ONE thing).


EDIT: Well to be clear, there will still be delusional doofuses and blowhards who applied in ignorance of how competitive it is. A lot of the dissuaded people are smart students at good schools who just lack the specific credentials.

(Note: Coming from an Honors, not SLIP applicant) I, too, have been wondering about how many people were dissuaded from applying. I've heard from a good amount of people that just gave up in the middle of completing their application, thinking it wasn't worth the effort. However, I'm sure there are people gunning hard for the spots, and I'm sure the competition will still be rough.

Also, as for the essays, this advice is a little late (but may be helpful to future applicants looking at this thread), the one thing essay can/probably should be used to bring out a lot of qualities about yourself. You can start talking about the "one thing", but then use that one thing to transition into other qualities. I was hesitant to do that at first, but it at least worked for SLIP, so I did it again.

Edit: The SLIP thread from last year has some great info on how the selection process will go from here on out. I'm not sure it'll do anything but make you crazy, but it does help you figure out how selections will be made. It can be very confusing to know where you stand (or even if you've been rejected), and that thread provides some clarity.

I would just like to say that the DOJ panel at GULC was hilarious. The hiring committee from 3 of the divisions, as well as the head of legal recruiting for the DOJ, basically said: "You won't get a job with us through SLIP or the Honors Program this year, but stay optimistic and volunteer. You will get lots of good experience." And that was without a straight face, I might add.

Putting the honors program the side, SLIP is similarly screwed? Please explain more. I didn't go to to that thingy, wrote short (but honest) essays for the application, and now feel like shit.

Yeah, I ended up writing simple but sincere answers, and am now wondering if I did enough. I get the sense you really have to be able to show commitment to both public service and the subject matter of component to have a good shot.

I wrote long, super-passionate (read: cheesy) essays for Honors. I'd had several drinks beforehand, so the passion was flowing freely.

idk this seems weird

according to the SLIP website, components don't nominate candidates for further consideration til early october

plus, you have to be referred to components before you can be nominated for further consideration, i think?

and i was looking at the SLIP thread from last year and people weren't even getting referred to components til the 22nd of sept or so

Those emails will not go out for a while. I doubt SLIPs have even been referred to components yet. I'm not sure what the person above is talking about...


...unless they're just skipping the review of applications this year and just selecting everyone in the top 1 percent at HYS. Maybe.
