Of course it's not actually true that all the As go to the same 5-10%. However, it is not so far from true to be easily dismissed. This is to say, if you're aren't getting pretty much all As, the bad news is that any shot at the top 5% is long gone. The good news is that the second half of the top ten falls off pretty steeply as far as GPA requirement is concerned. It isn't a linear relationship.
