this is kind of ridiculous. i have been coordinating with nicole woodward who told me after emailing her a lot of times that I would get a letter by the end of today. i highly doubt i will but i am going to call and email them tomorrow. has anyone out there actually received any sort of confirmation?

I also chose may 31 as my proposed start date; I have emailed but they haven't responded to my email. I guess it makes me feel better that others haven't heard either (i.e. it seems like its not our individual materials being lost or something--it appears that they just have at least a batch of people who they haven't followed up with yet).

Still, I wonder when we are going to hear. I was planning to move down to DC this weekend...

Has Tamika been responsive to your emails?
I emailed her once on Friday. Nothing yet. Last time I talked to her (or anyone) in HR was at the end of March when I submitted my paperwork.

I'm just confused as to the confusion here? They gave us a preference, we indicated our preference- I think we're good to go.

So you think we just show up and that's it?

The email I got from my division seemed to imply that the start date was for their own planning/assignment purposes only and that the practical details (security clearance/paperwork process, etc.) were separate and handled through HR.

Which division? Haven't heard anything from Enforcement.

I just thought that, like with every other internship/job, show up the first day to the front desk with the name of the supervisor/contact and go from there.

I guess if you haven't been contacted by your people/anyone then you should be worried, but otherwise I think it's pretty informal.

Yes I agree, that has been my experience as well. But I haven't gotten any info like that, or any letter from HR, or any confirmation about my clearance/start date.

Still nothing today.

Not to just randomly up this thread and get anyone's hopes up because I can see you are all waiting. I was just wondering what skills did you have that you feel may have helped you get this job. I'm interested in the SEC and I'm an 0L...obviously grades and all that will be important. I often hear students say that you don't need a finance background from undergrad to do corporate law and that what you need you'll learn in law school. Is the SEC the same way or do they favor finance/econ types? Sorry if this question is stupid.

I think in general, I suspect that the SEC is somewhat similar in that regard. My impression is that they mostly hire attorneys with a few years of law firm experience, so my guess is that at that point, they will be looking for someone with a strong litigation background and securities litigation experience (at least for the Enforcement Division). In terms of getting that experience, you don't need an undergrad/work background in finance--just go work for a large firm.

For 1L internships the situation might be a little different. Since 1Ls haven't taken courses in securities law, corporations, etc. I could see them looking more heavily at undergrad background and work experience if nothing else than for an indication of interest in the area. I had a couple of years of professional experience in a related area (but not that directly related).

I would apply and try to convey a strong interest in the type of work they do.

Good luck. I have tried calling them in the past and they have not picked up their phones. They have also not returned a voice mail I left.

I don't know. I am hoping to get confirmation before that. If I can't get through to anyone I am probably going to try to email or call the attorney who asked for my start date preference and ask what the deal is.
