this is why i'm getting braces. some people just get bothered by bad teeth. and teeth are one of the few things you can fix relatively easily. if you're ugly / short you will stay ugly / short.Stanford4Me wrote:Get braces. People with jacked up teeth disturb me.

I voted for the braces behind the teeth. I think it's worth it to deal with the short-term enunciation problems they may cause.bartleby wrote:this is why i'm getting braces. some people just get bothered by bad teeth. and teeth are one of the few things you can fix relatively easily. if you're ugly / short you will stay ugly / short.Stanford4Me wrote:Get braces. You're definitely not the only one using this rationalization.bartleby wrote: "well i'm about to take out 100k in loans for law school, what's another 5 or 6?"

after the first month or two you will not have that many (if any) speaking issues. I had braces from age 13-15 (and wore headgear EVERY NIGHT for those two years-- I haven't heard of people being asked to wear headgear during the day since like the 80s). Also noone is talking about this but if you have a serious overbite you have to wear headgear, unless you want to spend all of that money and not show the bottom of your teeth when you smile.
Anyway, when I was done with braces, my orthdontist suggested I get retainers glued behind my teeth because so many of his patients forgot to wear them and ended up coming back for braces again. So, I have a little metal bar glued behind the back of the teeth that show when I smile (not the molars or anything) and I have no enunciation problems. I can't imagine it could be much worse than that, if the braces are small and behind your teeth. If each bracket is big, this could cause an issue though-- you should ask an orthodontist about your options.

So will ugly teeth. I have an odd obsession with teeth, though.AreJay711 wrote: Well they might last for years though.

One of my British friends just got braces and she's in her 20s. THAT tells you how important teeth are!esq wrote:Not a big fan of the British I see.Stanford4Me wrote:Get braces. People with jacked up teeth disturb me.

In all seriousness, I think teeth are important, but it's up to you how much vanity (and easy flossing) matters.

Re: how important are teeth
I don't think this is necessarily true for all insurance. My dentist has suggested invisalign for me (my teeth are just a little crooked from not wearing my retainer after I had my braces off many moons ago). She seemed to imply that my insurance may cover some of it. I would assume that the same would be true about regular braces, depending on the quality of your dental plan. I could be wrong though....Anonymous User wrote:bartleby wrote: there's no insurance on braces when you're over 18/19.Is this true as a general rule for all insurance companies? Did not know this...
