If you are serious I completely agree. Everyone always thinks the end of the world is coming after every extended recession (early 1930s, 1970s, 1980s, etc). Life cyclical and so is the economy.

The economic crisis we're experiencing is most unlike any other. While boom periods followed the bust in the past, that was because the underlying problems weren't as dramatic. Currently, the economic problems are systemic and structural. Until they're corrected, a sustained recovery won't occur.
And since we're so fond of posting examples, I'll give you one: The economic stagflation of the Japanese economy in the 90s. What we're going through is pretty similar, and I don't expect that to change soon.

It seems like most of the hiring is done. There are some small firms hiring. Martindale is helpful. Also check symplicity for local positions. However, the SEC already interviewed at my school, as did Army JAG. So even government positions seem to be drying up quickly. A few firms hire 3Ls through OCI, but your chances seem to be getting slimmer and slimmer. Hang in there. Look back to your home market.Anonymous User wrote:What about firms not in NALP? A lot of them are sketchy, but some elite firms (especially smaller ones) apparently just don't list in NALP because they don't want to bother paying the fees. I suspect the answer is mostly "if not in NALP, probably way below market pay", but is there a way to use Martindale or something to find good-paying smaller firms? I'm an offer-less above median T14 student sobbing to myself as I page through midlaw/small-law. My hope is that there is some subset of firms that pays well but is still hiring. (Optimistically, one advantage of way-underperforming stats due to lousy market selection and the like is that I might theoretically be especially competitive for remaining positions which are mostly being targeted by those who are below-median or otherwise got shut out by stats.) I want to go into government or public interest, so I don't even necessarily care much about prestige (because ideally I'll never have to lateral), but I want the monies to make my negative monies go away.

Re: How to find what each specific firm pays..
This is the point where I have to disagree. We have had boom and bust before, e.g. the tech bubble in the late 1990s. The economy has always recovered. Whatever the underlying problems are, they are not as drastic as most would like to think, while we are looking at the tree we lose track of the forest. I say that because every economic indicator is pointing towards a strong recovery (stock market, currency trade etc). I just hope ppl don't get too pessimistic cause that could depress the recovery more than anything pres. Obama can do.Anonymous User wrote:The economic crisis we're experiencing is most unlike any other. The Japanese economy is a credited example but I think that is more an example of the failure of supply side economics and the proof of the validity of Keynesianism. There are not many similarities between the Japanese economic crisis and our current economic debacle, in my opinion.

Yeah, slimmer and slimmer indeed. I've been doing my best and I'll keep it up until I land something. Depressing as all hell. My home market is ... not an easy market to break into, but I did send some apps over there, and I'm sending out a huge wave tomorrow to see if I can catch anything.JazzOne wrote:It seems like most of the hiring is done. I thought I had heard, though, that after the biglaw thing winds down, a lot of smaller firms start hiring. I'm not sure if that's limited to terrible firms or not.

@ anon: u'r right about the japanese economy in the 90s, and i actually agree with u as far as current US monetary policy mirroring the japanese in 1989 is SHIT, thereby potentially causing similar results. and honestly, i tried reading about keynesian economic models and other theories on what caused japans collapse, and i dont know BRO. but at the end of the day im just an optimist and go with the gut feeling. its not very scientific but has worked thus far (i get laid a lot BRO).

Re: How to find what each specific firm pays..
I really don't know, but I'll give you some anecdotal evidence because it might lift your spirits a bit. There are still some successful and attractive firms hiring out there. I interviewed last week with a small firm in a large market. At first, I was not very excited about the firm. It looked like any other small law firm. But the firm's client list included some major professional sports teams and some other big-name corporations. I know that there are some sports tickets that float around that office. I felt like my interview went very well, and I fully anticipate receiving a call-back, which I will probably decline. I wish I could name the firm, but I want to keep it low profile until I formally decline the offer. So, there are a few diamonds in the rough out there. Some good advice that I received: Don't reek of desperation.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah, slimmer and slimmer indeed. I've been doing my best and I'll keep it up until I land something.
