Does anyone know how long it took in 2007 for any of the secondary/tertiary markets to increase their base salaries? I'm at a firm with 145k base and wondering if that will go anywhere.

I wrote above about TX markets only taking 6 months to match in 2007. There are increased pressures now in some markets (e.g. Houston) since other national players (e.g. Kirkland) have entered their markets.monsterman wrote:Does anyone know how long it took in 2007 for any of the secondary/tertiary markets to increase their base salaries? Most of the comp leaders won't do NYC only. But I could see a bunch of V50's only doing NYC. It'll be interesting to see what Latham, Skadden, K&E, Quinn, and Gibson do. If they all go 180k in CA & DC, I don't see how the most of the rest of the V50 don't.bruinfan10 wrote:odds that this is a nyc-only raise?
But for DC, I could see Covington, A&P, etc. not doing 180k.

Hasn't TX changed so much since then, that it's basically a new market?abitaman6363 wrote:I wrote above about TX markets only taking 6 months to match in 2007. It's not 2014 in TX--but the major players are still doing very well.Desert Fox wrote:Hasn't TX changed so much since then, that it's basically a new market?abitaman6363 wrote:I wrote above about TX markets only taking 6 months to match in 2007. Could see a firm like Milbank going to $180k in its other markets. Typical white shoe firm, only 2 other offices in the US. Could be wishful thinking.

I really hope someone drops a 190 pay scale and makes Cravath pull and refile.

Re: NY GOES TO 180k! IT HAPPENED!!!!
I wonder if anyone will push to 190. Smart firms have been positioning themselves for 190 for awhile, and a 10k bump would give them the "prestige" of being the firm that bested Cravath. Obviously not going to make them more "prestigious" than Cravath, but for their rival V-whatevers it buys them the publicity.

Any guesses about how this might affect clerkship bonuses? If the point of the bonus is to account somewhat for the gap between government salaries and biglaw salaries, you'd think the clerkship bonus would need to rise in tandem with salaries, right?

Re: NY GOES TO 180k! IT HAPPENED!!!!
For the biggest firms in the secondary markets, it probably only takes one to move the entire market. If Gibson starts paying it's associates somewhere like Palo Alto or Irvine $180k, Latham almost has to match that.
It might be more interesting for the firms down the pecking order. It might be that some stratification emerges in secondary markets. Even if the biggest firms that have always paid associates in smaller offices on the NY scale move salaries up uniformly across all offices, it might be that other firms can't keep pace.

DLA probably should be on there given the number of associates and high quality worksublime wrote:smaug wrote:Having a bit of a laugh at the selection of firms above
Eh, I just went down the vault list. Probably should have used PPP but whatever.
I think there is one extra slot if there is anybody in particular you/people think I should throw in.
