Yeah, it's strange. I've also gotten offers in the mail (after I got the call, obviously) and it feels dumb. (Bonus points to Akin who FedEx overnighted me an offer. Like, I got the email and phone call, guys. If you need to send me a physical offer, it can wait a day or two. I did a lot of FedExing as part of an old job, that's ... not inexpensive if you're doing it in volume.)

I think the real reason is that it softens the blow of the rejection: A firm dumb enough to make you wait for them to mail out a rejection is definitely not one you would be happy working at.

Not that that is true at all, but at least I can pretend it is.
