Re: Columbia EIP 2016
I know this has been discussed at length, but I would like some advice about contacting firms for pre-EIP interviews. It seems like the general consensus is that this is a good idea, and I would like to try and set up at least one pre-EIP interview to make EIP a little less stressful.
However, I am working abroad this summer and will not be back in NYC until the weekend before EIP. Do you think any firm would do a pre-EIP interview on August 1st or 2nd, or should I just focus on preparing for EIP? I don't want to miss out on these interviews, especially if so many other students are doing them, but don't know if it's worth the stress.
FWIW: Mid-Stone (3.5-3.6), decent interviewer, want NYC transactional.

Since you won't be back until EIP and want NYC not wherever you are, just prepare for EIP. Though the percentage is growing, most people don't pursue pre-EIP stuff either because they can't, don't know it can be done, or are comfortable just doing EIP.You won't be behind the vast majority of the class.Anonymous User wrote:I know this has been discussed at length, but I would like some advice about contacting firms for pre-EIP interviews. At midstone, you shouldn't have much of a problem getting a solid nyc firm at EIP. Just make sure you maximize the number of interviews: email the firms you bid on but didn't get.

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
1) Honestly, I don't know. I think I added maybe two firms during add period. I did notice that the NYC firms that were available went very quickly, but maybe the non-NYC firms were a bit easier to add. Not sure.Anonymous User wrote:Thank you so much! This advice was on point.I had a couple of followup questions:
1) How hard is it to get additional interviews in the add period? The reason I'm hesitant to take off some of the no failed bid firms is because they are better fits for me than a lot of the firms I have above them (DPW SV, Simpson SV, Gunderson) and I'm afraid I'll miss out on them in the add period. My class seems to have a higher than normal number of people targeting CA.
2) OCS is telling me I'm being too aggressive with my NYC picks, is this the case? From what I have read, a 3.66 should be able to snag something in the V10 right?
3) I'm also struggling to come up with more NY offices I'm interested in. I added Weil (dropped off their satellite) and Deb. but that's about it. Skadden's and K&E's FFB are both really high and I would rather bid their CA offices anyway. I guess I can add JD and W&C but people love to shit on them and I'm kind of turned off.
4) This might be super specific information, but what's the deal with Cooley SV? Do they just not hire from CLS? Their offer rate is terrible compared to WSGR/Fenwick/Gunderson and they seem to be a peer firm.
2) With a 3.66, you should be able to easily snag something in the V10, assuming you practice interviewing and are not tremendously awkward. On that note, practice your interviewing until you have it down pat, which means practicing with other breathing human beings who will give you honest feedback. OCS should be able to help with that. I believe I did something like ten full-length practice interviews before EIP.
3) I think White & Case is a good call. Just look at Chambers & Partners NYC M&A firms and draw from there.
4) Dunno, I didn't mess with Cooley SV when I did EIP for exactly that reason. They don't want CLS folks? Their loss.

How are we supposed to practice interviewing if we're away from NYC and not near family/friends?

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
Ask your co-workers and/or supervisors. I found that both my co-workers and supervisors from last summer were willing to help out, and I ended up doing a total of four practice interviews that way (one from each of four). You can also probably do Skype interviews with OCS (and your friends, for that matter).kingpin101 wrote:How are we supposed to practice interviewing if we're away from NYC and not near family/friends?

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
Did anybody do the Bay Area Diversity Fair in prior years? I got quite a few preselects for screeners at my top firms. However, I'm hearing that it is extremely hard to convert career fair screeners into CBs and offers.
I'm afraid that if I interview and don't get a callback, I'll be locked out of doing a callback for these firms at EIP, where the chances might be better. Is this something that happens at Columbia?
Tl;dr: doing a career fair where it is hard to secure callback. Wondering if I should cancel with firms I want.
Thanks in advance!

Above list seems reasonable but I don't think I can sign off on any non-Stone bid list that doesn't include SRZ.
Also get rid of Cleary unless that paralegal experience was at Cleary.

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
^ Agreed - a lot of your top firms (particularly bids 2-4) are very grade sensitive so you're wasting bids on firms you have a low shot and missing key firms that are more in your range as a result.smaug wrote:This is aggressive. I am considering IP. My focus when putting together this list was more on litigation but I have a science background and am interested in IP Lit.

Would anyone be willing to share the % honors report for firms with me by PM? If not easy to send, % for V25 or so would be very interesting to me. Thanks.

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
Sharing it outside CLS, and especially with a recruiting partner in one of the competing firms, would violate the terms under which CLS provided the report. It is grounds for disciplinary action and being banned from EIP. And it would definitely be unethical.itbdvorm wrote:Would anyone be willing to share the % honors report for firms with me by PM? Re: Columbia EIP 2016
I imagine it is useful, or at least vaguely of interest, for any firm to know what its peer firms are doing w/r/t grade cut-offs. Firms likely already have a very good idea, but more data never hurt anyone.pinkiepie wrote:Sharing it outside CLS, and especially with a recruiting partner in one of the competing firms, would violate the terms under which CLS provided the report. As helpful as itbdvorm has been in his "v15 partner" thread, I agree with pinkiepie that it is probably not worth the risk to pass along the data, though. Sucks, because it would be nice to return the favor in some small way to itbdvorm. He really has been and continues to be one of the top resources on TLS.
Anyway, just wanted to chime in to defuse any tension. I think pinkiepie's response was unnecessarily harsh to an understandable--but probably not fulfillable--request.

Contact OCS. If you're in a fairly large city they can contact alumni interested in doing practice interviews. If not, see georgebush's advice as well.kingpin101 wrote:How are we supposed to practice interviewing if we're away from NYC and not near family/friends?

3.61, no LR, solid interviewer, okay with striking out. Want DC lit, but happy with NYC. Feedback on my bids list please? Should I just tack on random firms for the last 10 bids? Am I missing any solid lit places?

You left off a number of top level DC lit offices. How do you include Steptoe, but leave off places like A&P and Skadden? You clearly aren't hedging based on grades, so the omissions are super odd.Anonymous User wrote:3.61, no LR, solid interviewer, okay with striking out. Want DC lit, but happy with NYC.
