No it's not. Looks like KE is swimming in work that they would otherwise be leaving on the table without having the 3Ls do it. The partner takes a cut, the 3L gets a portion and everyone is happier than they were if that work jsut sat on the table.

That only applies to hiring more people. I'm not doing any more work whether I get paid 170k or 210k.

well yeah that's the point. you don't have to do more work. You think the midlevels at KE are like shit there goes our raises? Nah theyre like fuck yeah I don't have to do that work and the partnership becomes more profitable so the partner passes some of those profits the 3Ls created to himself and some crumbs to you too. I get what you're saying that salary is 0-sum at the end of the year once all the work has been done and you have your pot of money to divvy up, but that's just a snapshot view.

Disagree. We are talking about two separate worlds here. People don't move between one and the other very much. Of the 100 or so people in my practice area I've seen in my market so far (and I always make a point to research other attorneys) not a single one has worked in biglaw or at a comparable job.

They are essentially different markets altogether.

Different markets, yet you tried to be in one market and defaulted to the second market because of a lack of pie. What I'm saying is that those 100 people in your different market that you now have to compete with, maybe one day a long time ago before they decided to be in that market they tried to get into a different market but couldn't, so they ended up in yours. You now have to compete with 99 other people. Maybe next year though, of the 10 new people to your market that there would have been, 1 more person gets into the other market and doesnt enter your market. You are now competing with 1 less person. That's a good thing. Let me know if you still have questions.

It's not a good thing for anybody but biglaw associates. As someone who works in shitlaw, I can tell you with 100% confidence that my clients are NOT going to be paying me any more because the real lawyers now make more. They can't afford to pay me more. It's not different for any of the other lawyers in my office either (they practice in different areas).

If biglaw pay jumps, the only difference for me is I feel even shittier about my own life.
