Okay, I'm an AJD who has one grade and wants to play on the conservative side and assume a 3.5 GPA.

Re: Northwestern OCI
Need some advice as to the order of my bid list. Only bidding NY firms. On a journal, below median GPA, solid past and summer work experience. Heard a good tactic was to group some by interview day also so I tried to do that. Thanks!

Working on putting together a bid list. Looking to bid SF/Palo Alto, Chicago, and NY, but don't know if that's spreading myself too thin. Prety much right at median, secondary journal, some WE. Didn't really know what to do past the mid-20s, so ended up putting a bunch of reaches.

Imho, bidding Chi and NY, on and off might set you up for trouble. Median people should stick with one market... preferably NY.Anonymous User wrote:Working on putting together a bid list. ~3.65 secondary journal targeting CHI transactional. NY/CA bids are all backups as far as I'm concerned. Mostly looking for feedback on bids 10-20 since I'm having a hard time guessing which of these are underbid. Any feedback would be great though, TYIA

Re: Northwestern OCI
You can probably throw more V10 NY offices as long shots in your 20-25. Might not get them but it's better than only bidding 20.Anonymous User wrote:~3.65 secondary journal targeting CHI transactional. NY/CA bids are all backups as far as I'm concerned. Also it's better to say you bid a firm and didn't get a screener if you're trying to mass mail then it is to not bid them at all. I think firms get a resume book with all of the resumes of people who bid them but didn't get a screener through the lottery.

Thanks, just talked it over and reworked it. Added more V10 and got a little more conservative with my Chi/CA bids (conservative as in getting more bids).bdubs wrote:You can probably throw more V10 NY offices as long shots in your 20-25. Might not get them but it's better than only bidding 20.

"please rank office locations in order of preference"
Whenever it says that, should we rank for our preferences or is this a trap and should we just put down 1

They do not care enough to set up a trap for you, especially if they have not yet met you.

Don't rank every office they have in order of your preference, but if you have a genuine interest in multiple offices I think you can list them. Be ready in case someone asks if you're interviewing in another market with a good story though.lhanvt13 wrote:"please rank office locations in order of preference"

Alum here. Doesn't seem like you'll get Dechert, Proskauer. Shearman might be on the cusp as well. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember that your GPA would not be in contention for the more grade-selective Debevoise.Anonymous User wrote:Any feedback? Definitely this. But I think the V10 NY ususally tends to be around in the tail end of the top 10 bids and can usually be had in the low teens. I think it depends a lot on 1) last year's CB min and median, 2) # of slots, 3) whether slots are shared, 4) how bad the "bid NY" anxiety is running in the classPokemon wrote:Depends on the year. Deb is less selective than some other firms on this list. Those others being Kirkland PW stb and maybe skadden.Anonymous User wrote:Alum here. Doesn't seem like you'll get Dechert, Proskauer. Re: Northwestern OCI
I agree with this. I would maybe think about switching Deb with Paul Hastings, since both have 20 spots and PH is a bit less grade selective. I would also think about moving Paul Weiss and Simpson above Weil simply due to the number of spots for each, but I would still keep Weil relatively high because you definitely are competitive there.Anonymous User wrote:Alum here. Re: Northwestern OCI
Alum here. This does not reflect the prevailing opinion, especially since KE is Ny on that list; I distinctly recall multiple years' OCI stats being relatively low for KE NY. I also know multiple people who got Simpson who were at OP's GPA or lower. And skadden's reputation is that it is The V5 that dips GPA-wise (not saying that a 3.45 is competitive, just that skadden is not the right example to cite here). Sorry if this comes off as harsh, I'm really not trying to be... this poster seems uninformed about NY interviewing.Anonymous User wrote:Deb is less selective than some other firms on this list. Should I take out Linklaters to move all the other firms up one spot? Their NYC office had a favorable CB GPA spread which was my reason for including them (and Freshfields) at all. There is no information available about Debevoise. Is there a hope of getting any of 13-16? Is this list too aspirational?
3.45 GPA
1. Latham 19 (NYC ONLY)
2. Cahill 20 (NYC ONLY)
3. White & Case 20 (NYC ONLY)
4. Milbank 40 (NYC ONLY)
5. Linklaters 20 (ALL OFFICES)
6. Debevoise 20 (NYC ONLY)
7. Weil 60 (NYC ONLY)
8. Fried Frank 40 (NYC ONLY)
9. Cadwalader 40 (NYC ONLY)
10. Simpson Thacher 40 (NYC ONLY)
11. Shearman & Sterling 20 (NYC ONLY)
12. Willkie 40 (NYC ONLY)
13. Paul Hastings 20 (NYC ONLY)
14. Paul Weiss 40 (NYC ONLY)
15. Proskauer 20 (NYC ONLY)
16. Skadden 20 (NYC ONLY)
17. Kaye Scholer 40 (NYC ONLY)
18. Kirkland & Ellis 20 (NYC ONLY)
19. Kramer Levin ???
20. Dechert 20 (ALL OFFICES)
edit: Looking at the two NU alums working in Debevoise's NY office, it seems that they were pretty credentialed. One was EIC of law review + magna + coif, and the other was law review + coif.

Re: Northwestern OCI
3.5 GPA
NYC. Which firms went high (1-5, 6-10) in the last few years?
I've been throwing less selective firms with 20 slots up there (Cahill, Paul Hastings, Proskauer, Shearman, White & Case). Not sure if this is the right approach though because I could see people bidding even more heavily on well-known/popular firms with 20 slots like Latham/Kirkland NY. Any idea what the historic trend has been?

3.5 here with Law Review and seven years WE(management) at a Fortune 150. Do I have any shot at DC firms with that GPA (Holland, Mayer, Winston, K&L, & Goodman) or should I just bid NY?

Re: Northwestern OCI
I'm saying deb isn't as selective as people were making them out to be. I think if you're going to caution against deb because of GPA, you should caution against the others, too. If he has a shot at skadden/PW/K&E/stb, then he certainly has a shot at deb.Anonymous User wrote:Alum here. This does not reflect the prevailing opinion, especially since KE is Ny on that list; I distinctly recall multiple years' OCI stats being relatively low for KE NY. I know people in recruiting at deb so I don't really care whether or not you think I'm informed.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
