Got assignment at 3 due at 11A tomorrow. Went home when it started to get dark to work remotely. Remote access software doesn't work. Having minor panic attack.

It's not even 10pm, you've got time. Get back to the office ASAP. Bring a Red Bull and a sleeping bag.

Actual advice or a joke?

I meant it as a joke. However, if it's a big research assignment and I wasn't confident I could finish it within the confines of the morning hours, I'd probably go back to the office.

ETA: Many of the junior associates at my firm told me that they pulled quite a few all-nighters (or were there until 5am) when they were summers, so my views are a bit skewed.

Why are summers pulling an all nighter? Or did they have poor time management? Sounds terrible.

Don't roll your eyes. If this is the dude's true passion, then don't begrudge him for finding it and doing what he wants to do. Believe it or not, there is a contingent of people who actually greatly enjoy biglaw.

It will involve sacrifices. If the guy wants to make partner at this firm and do this for the rest of his life, he's looking at a life where he neglects his health, his family and the other things that might make him happy. But different people have different priorities. As long as he has no regrets on his deathbed, let him get the thrills that he wants.

But, on the flip side, a word of caution for the dude. Don't confuse blue chip clients and being on dealbook with substance. I've done deals of these kinds and they aren't glamorous in the least. Some of these corporations are not organized in the least, and half of your job can become managing the bureaucracy of the company you're representing. On top of that, it's important to realize that the important deal point the most senior partner on your team is negotiating will have very little impact on the overall economics of the deal if it closes successfully (and almost all of them do). The eventuality that would arise to cause a reverse break-up fee to come about, for example, is not as high as your M&A class taught you. Like most of real life law, and how much it is different from law school, you spend most of your time on stuff that is not controversial. Almost never will you test the boundaries like you did in your class on tort law.

But hey, if this thrills you, then more power to you.

Putting in long hours for 10-12 weeks isn't that big a deal. Long lunches and minimal expectations really take the edge off. And at least in my case I want meaningful exposure to as much as possible so I know what I want to do when the real thing starts.

Yeah, waking up early as fuck every morning has easily been the worst part for me. Going to school a 5 minute subway ride away from my apartment didn't really prepare me for spending an hour fighting traffic in the morning.

Yeah, my commute is about the same for work as it is for school, but I find I have to give myself an extra 30 minutes in the morning to get myself ready for work (fuck shaving every day like a real adult). Plus, you know, work starts well before 1:30 in the afternoon every day.

My commute to work is SO MUCH BETTER than my commute to school and I'm loving it. Waking up at 7 (actually 7:18 cause I snooze twice) to get to there at 8:30 is amazing. But getting up that early is still hard as eff.

And I feel you on the waking up early thing. I've been getting up at 6, which is pretty much the worst thing ever. This is the earliest I've had to wake up since I was back in middle school and my first class started at 7.

Oh yeah, the paycheck. My firm surprised me with an advance in my welcome packet but I blew through most of it by paying off my credit cards and by making several late night Seamless purchases.

First week was solid. My health is starting to decline tremendously. No self control at these lunches/happy hours/dinners/breakfasts/coffee breaks/snack runs.

So far I've just accepted that I'm going to stuff my face at lunch, so I've done the rest of my grocery shopping accordingly. No real snacks, very light breakfast food, reasonable dinner, etc. If you don't snack even a big lunch doesn't hurt you that badly. Now on the days where it's lunch + happy hour or dinner it might be rough.
