I had a PI offer open for a while that was something I didn't want to do at all and would hate having to explain during OCI, then had several things present themselves last week and got an offer today from a mid-sized firm in my school's city. Huge relief to finally have something I'm excited about for the summer!

Re: The Official 1L Summer Employment Thread - 2012 Edition
i am interviewing soon with the once great heller ehrman for a paid legal records position.
how will this look on my resume? i am concerned considering i won't probably be doing much more than doc review and filings but i need the money this summer. i am thinking that i should also probably try to find some legal volunteer position elsewhere so that i can have some opportunity to do some legal research this summer?
thoughts?

1L 12 week SA @ 1K p/w in secondary market. Pretty excited for a 1L at a T30. Hopefully will lead to 2L summer offer and more $$$ for next summer.
Also getting free rent since staying at friends place. So little expenses.

Any opinions on Nelson Mullins? Just wondering if anyone has worked for them previously. Will be down in SC and am curious how their office is and how their workload is for associates. TLS tends to give better opinions than people who actually work at the firms sometimes.

will big law employers at OCI be turned off by criminal law on my resume?

Probably not, it's ok to find non-corporate things interesting. But if most of your prior experience (before LS) is public interest based, you may need to demonstrate your interest in big law type work.Lasers wrote:interviewing for a law clerk position with a criminal defense firm. super interesting work.

That's not a bad idea. Employers want to see that you have done legal research. Trick is to find a place that takes anyone and would let you do 10-15 hours a week. Or look for something during the school year to fill the void. Small firms make you do research and they pay you.Lasers wrote:i am interviewing soon with the once great heller ehrman for a paid legal records position.

only prior relevant work experience i have is at a small firm. no PI work at all. i don't think it'll be hard to show during interviews i want biglaw since i really do only want biglaw.JJDancer wrote:Probably not, it's ok to find non-corporate things interesting. got an offer for a research assistant position. would that be sufficient to fill the "legal research/writing" void?snowpeach06 wrote:That's not a bad idea. For those of you doing a summer job in a particular field, how much are you looking into / doing research about that field before you start your internship?
So far I'm just doing a little bit, just so maybe I have some idea of where to look when I get my first assignment.

Still no job offers....paid or unpaid. If I don't work during 1L summer, do I just give up completely?

for some reason, in my search for a second job to fill my summer, i'm getting so many more interviews recently than i did before (and from nicer paid firm jobs/interesting government positions). just apply everywhere, start calling firms, etc.
still jobs out there.

I hate to give away one of my job search secrets, but if you guys haven't looked at lawstudentjobs.net yet you should give it a shot - it aggregates legal intern job listings, and they're still posting more jobs almost every day.
To the jobless anon: have you tried looking outside of DC? I know DC can be kind of a tough market, especially as it's so small and there are so many schools there.

Is the rule with Judicial Internships to dress like the clerks? When I went to interview the clerks were all business casual I think, but the judges were all in suits (obviously). Should I wear business casual, or play it safe in a suit?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
