Gotcha, concurred

I asked if there would be a chance for me to develop a writing sample that could be useful for my next summer. I think that is a pretty fair question and the judge said she works with her extern to help write part of an opinion.

Dany, your tagline is so good. I need to see it more in the non-lounge threads.

There's huge variance from judge to judge. It's something really important to ask about. If a judge is going to have you sit and watch, then you should probably turn the offer down. Lore that you shouldn't ever turn a judge down applies to clerkships, and maybe you don't want to do that if they actually had plans for you to do actual writing & researching. But if their plans were to just have you sit around, I'm sure there will be no hard feelings if you turn it down. Side note, I'm using "you" in the general sense here.
Moreover, it seems judges will usually tell you or give you a heads up in advance if they don't plan to give you anything substantive. It will usually come in the form of "if anything else comes up, you can decide to take that instead." I'd ask to make sure because they might just make you do administrative stuff like making trial binders.

Also, it is not too late for summer jobs, at least for some federal judges. I am in a major district and they are just starting to evaluate apps. It is getting there though. Small firms and in-house are just starting to advertise positions right now so its not too late for those. When you get to Mid-April that would probably be the time to panic.

Just officially accepted my SA position. Fuck yes. Firm was super happy to have me aboard and I got some really nice words from some of the people I interviewed with. It feels nice to be wanted. It feels nice to be loved. Fuck the firms that didn't call me back.

So... anyone freaking out/striking out? I'm considering taking an RA position and then interning somewhere during my first semester of 2L. I don't think I can wait anymore to hear back from places that simply won't respond, and this job is guaranteed for me. Not sure how much it would impact my resume, but it's better than nothing.

What types of places have you been applying to? I know some public interest places are still hiring. I am still getting interviews (which I am turning down because I have already accepted another offer). I think it is generally better to do some sort of legal position where you could get a writing sample and legal experience generally. Do you have a deadline for when you need to let your professor know if you will be RAing for him/her? If you can find a legal internship before then, I think that would be better, but if you cannot, RAing is better than doing something totally non-legal or nothing at all.

I know an internship now would be way better, but the thing is that the RA position pays. I don't really have a way to support myself when I'm out of school, and I was hoping I could just wait until the Fall to get a decent internship. Ugh.

I'd be really up for SV/bay area TLS meetups if anyone else would be interested. I won't know very many people out there and it would be great to meet some of you guys.

I'm staying in SF for the summer. I think I'll be gone in may but I start June 4th so I'll definitely be back by then!

trying to make a final decision b/t 2 offers: ftc (consumer protection) in dc and antitrust/consumer protection work @ a state AG's office in the pacific nw. i worked in dc pre-law school; would love to establish some (however weak) ties to the nw. the state AG spot is through a fellowship and thus paid, ftc of course is not.

thoughts? advice on which is the better option? is there a better option?

thanks.

Been a couple weeks since I sent in some apps to judges. One asked for a transcript (meh) and one said he's not taking externs. The rest gave no response whatsoever. Safe to say I'm dinged from the nonresponders and move on?

I hate how govt. folks use silence as a method of ding (that's been the pattern for all govt places I applied to). It only takes less than a minute to email me saying that I suck and should go die.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
