Yeah, I saw him at PATH too, and wasn't impressed at all. It just sucks to get a ding, no matter what. Maybe they saw my resume and thought I was a "true believer" since, according to him at PATH, he isn't into them.
Yea, his entire presentation (in multiple panels) was odd and resulted in my not applying to nj. I'm sure I wasn't the only person who did that...

I was also pretty horrified because he basically berated a kid who volunteered to do a mock interview demo. It was really uncomfortable.
Possible to give examples of why they wouldnt be into true believers, and what kind of crap he gave the volunteer?

Would you guys recommend attending PATH otherwise?

He didn't come right out and say he wasn't into true believers. But he said he would hire a former DA over a 100% PD oriented candidate if the DA was a better trial lawyer. That may seem like common sense, but for most PD's its a no-no. He seemed more about just filling a role instead of having passion for the purpose. His point of view seemed very out of place among speakers from the Bronx Defenders and Philly Defenders and PDS, all of which are true believer offices. Seann Riley, from Bronx Def., had the funniest facial expressions whenever this guy would speak (they sat next to each other on one of the panels). It was a mixture of contempt and amusement.

As far as the volunteer, it was during a panel where recruiting people from Maryland, PDS, and NJ were doing simulated hypos with volunteers. When it was his turn to do the hypo, he literally was screaming at the kid. And he would NOT BACK OFF. He was simulating a client, and yes, clients can be difficult, but I swear the man just repeated himself for 15 minutes yelling at a poor PDS law clerk. He was trying, but this dude just was awful. And he was just shady and came off as... off. It was awkward for the entire room, until finally we ran out of time and the breakout session was over. It was just a strange experience.

I was very glad I went to PATH. Would I have traveled all the way to DC just for it? I don't know. But I was in DC for the summer and it was free. I thought that the hypo demonstrations were especially helpful as well as getting to pick the employers' brains on how they choose and make hiring decisions. I though it was useful and made me feel better about the hiring process. I felt much more comfortable at the interviews I have had (one hypo I got was almost exactly the same as one that was demonstrated at PATH). And I was able to speak to some of them one on one which was also helpful.

PSA: The next PATH conference won't be until 2016 (its semi-annual).

I'm the previous anon who initially, but this was exactly it...and I'm glad I'm not the only one it stuck with! The point was to demonstrate interview hypos and the previous 2 interviewers (from PDS & MD) were friendly and in the spirit of the exercise. Then with NJ the hypo got very adversarial/aggressive; at an extremely collegial event it was strange and uncomfortable.

As an aside PATH is amazing and if you have an interest in being a PD, if you can you should go!

Well there was an example of a defendant who didn't want his defender to bring a certain witness and Joe (nj pd) said it doesn't matter, client only has two choices, to plea and if he wants to testify, so nj doesn't care about what the client wants..also he said he doesn't care if the defender is a true believer..he would rather hire someone who is a great litigator than someone who is a true believer..and he doesn't even think there is a problem with the system..he's appointed by a republican governor btw

Since it's after 5pm now, I think what I'm gonna do is not check my email / TLS at all tomorrow and then just look at 'em all at the end of the day to help keep my stress level down.

If you manage that, you will have way more restraint than the rest of us.

Preselects are due by 12 AM on 10/2. That's just a few short hours from now. :P

Where did you see this? I assumed it was COB tomorrow. I figure if the deadline was midnight tonight, they would likely have submitted them before COB today...

where did you read that? not arguing with you, I like this much better, but I don't see that deadline anywhere!
If you click on the employer, it takes you to an information page. Scroll down, and there are a bunch of dates. One is the date preselects are due.

And the email that EJW sent out yesterday said that employers have UNTIL October 2 to select preselects.

I'm with you. The website says selections are due at midnight, but I can't believe they didn't have them sent out by close of business.
