I've been told by a civil legal aid attorney specializing in labor and employment law that legal aid looks very askance at prosecution experience. She pretty much steered me away from doing DA my 1L summer. It really does make sense though, considering that legal aid attorneys work largely with poor people of color, who are more likely to be targeted by the criminal justice system/incarcerated. And the fact that legal aid attorneys (for instance, in immigration or public benefits) deal with the government in an adversarial setting.

So yeah, I wouldn't take the no screeners personally.

Okay, just throwing this out there. I got offered an unpaid internship with a state attorney general's office. Would it be worth it for my career where BigLaw is concerned in 3L after graduation if I pursue it for this upcoming summer?

Is this for 1L summer? Seems fine to me. As far as BigLaw is concerned, you should be working anywhere in a legal capacity your 1L summer where you'll be able to develop a solid writing sample and discuss cogently what you did over the summer for OCI.

I'm also on Law Review at my school, and have a paid internship gig for next summer as well. This unpaid internship would happen after the paid internship gig with a company. I rank in top 15% of my class. So I'm just wondering if it's worth it to do the unpaid gig if it will help me with my chances of BigLaw.

An AG internship probably won't make a perceptible difference in terms of BigLaw. 3LOL OCI is widely thought of as a crapshoot on these boards, anyway (i.e. it's mainly for folks with BigLaw who wanna "trade up" firms). What rank school do you go to?

You're probably not getting biglaw anyway. Even if biglaw was an option, no an internship with an attorney generals office wouldn't help. Do it if you're interested, but it won't get you any points as far as biglaw hiring goes.

Anon, what did you do your 1L summer? I would do the AG's internship if you have even a modicum of interest in prosecution/gov't work. Gotta keep your options option and get as diverse experience as possible. Like gdane said, BigLaw is probably not happening unless by T4 you meant a Top 4 school.

I did a judicial internship with a federal district judge.

What kind of T4 do you attend? Is it one of the crappy ones (i.e. Florida Coastal, Cooley, etc.) or a solid state flagship that happens to be ranked low but places well in its state (i.e. U of Wyoming, U of Montana, etc.)? If it's the latter you may want to consider clerkships, since you are on LR and have a good relationship with a judge. Again, total crapshoot, but you miss all the shots you don't take. If you're interested in this route, keep bustling to do well in your classes, and maybe RA/TA for a prof that could go to bat for you.

Make sure you're interning/clerking at places during the year as well, getting good face-time with folks that may wanna hire you after graduation.

GL with the hustle! And congrats on getting a paid summer gig--that's much better than what the overwhelming majority of T4 students could muster.

Any advice for people about applying as an admitted attorney with a year's experience at an out of state public defender? I love PD work and prefer to work on that side of the table but my personal life is pulling me geographically towards places that don't have pd offices and Id really like to continue to do criminal work. I also respect the work you guys do and think that doing a few years on your side would be really helpful for my career.

Just had my second round interview with Brooklyn yesterday morning. Thought everything went well, but I struggled a bit with the hypo. Based on what I've read so far, I guess it'll be a long wait until I hear back anything about advancing to the third round.

Sorry if the wording was unclear. I only got one hypo.

during my bronx screener i was told references were enough and we did not need to submit lord but other interviewers told students otherwise. do you need lors after your 1st round?

I was told during the screener that they were "missing" my letters of reference, but my understanding from the website is they didn't need those until you get called back for a 2nd round?

One office called my references, but 99% it wasn't Queens. Probably Brooklyn.

Any consensus on when/how quickly to schedule 2nd round with DANY? Is ASAP the credited move?

If you got the email invite for a 2nd round, you want to schedule that asap.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
