Is there a consensus on why it’s taking so long for firms like Skadden, DPW, S&C (etc.) to at least match the salary increases of Cravath & Simpson? I assumed the partnerships would be thrilled it wasn’t $200K out of Cravath, and then match in short order.
There’s no way those firms go into OCI while direct competitors are paying $10K more a year for incoming talent... right? (TLDR: Tell me I’m not crazy and that a raise is coming)

Rising 2L from HYS here: from talking to a bunch of other rising 2Ls after a firm reception in NY earlier this week, the non-matching firms are slowly but surely lowering themselves in the eyes of biglaw-aspiring students creating their bidlists.

Why? I work at Cleary and there’s genuine concern here that the new Vault rankings are hurtful to the firm’s ability to attract the best talent from the most elite law schools. This year, we have an unusual amount of kids from unprestigious schools (MVPB on down) that the partner and clients find revolting. Cleary better match ASAP.Anonymous User wrote:I'd roll my eyes at you but I'm laughing too hard.Anonymous User wrote:Rising 2L from HYS here: from talking to a bunch of other rising 2Ls after a firm reception in NY earlier this week, the non-matching firms are slowly but surely lowering themselves in the eyes of biglaw-aspiring students creating their bidlists.

Very curious now as to whether Milbank, Jones Day, Proskauer, & Winston will match the new scale with more compensation for seniors and summer bonuses. If not, seems like there are now two salary scales out there.Anonymous User wrote:https://abovethelaw.com/2018/06/paul-we ... statement/

Jones Day already doesn't pay bonuses and screws their midlevels; this doesn't change anything for themAnonymous User wrote:Jones Day? Now we have the special summer bonus, wonder if the year-end bonus would stay the same for a fourth (?) consecutive year as a result. Sad or us incoming first-years.

And also, S&C could go back to the $160k scale, and then we would seem to have three out there!Anonymous User wrote:Very curious now as to whether Milbank, Jones Day, Proskauer, & Winston will match the new scale with more compensation for seniors and summer bonuses. Just received an email:
To All Associates,
Based upon review of your performance over the last review period, and in consultation with the departmental advisory committee, I write to inform you that you will not receive a salary increase this year. As noted in prior discussions, we will continue to work towards improved performance over the next year.
Regards,
