Re: The Official 1L Summer Employment Thread - 2012 Edition
Quick question...
Im kinda freaking out...
I sent an email to the email listed on the LCLD email to send out applications (it was attorney.recruiting@sutherland.com) and have been waiting for a response. I double checked, and although the official sheet has that email, the website, etc. has the recruiting coordinators email...
If the deadline hadn't passed I would send the email again but now I feel like maybe they haven't received it... kinda nervous about it, anyone have any suggestions?
As a sidenote I plan on sending them a continues interest type not next week(preferably after March 1st) and Im probably gonna send it to the actual recruiters email..

Does anyone know or have a good idea if there are any judges in CA still looking for 1L interns? It's probably too late, isn't it? Even for Superior Court judges...and I hear the California Court of Appeal doesn't take 1L interns...what about the District Court judges?

I have a chance to work at a small law firm in a far away city in Texas, closer to brownsville but its unpaid. Is something like this even worth trying to get. I know if its between this and doing nothing, its better to do this but it just feels weird having to relocate down there and find a place to live all the while not being paid for any of the work.

I know a 1L with the CA CoA for the summer but I think it's super rare for them to take 1Ls, most of them told me that in their rejection letters. Around ten days ago at least one district court judge was still interviewing. I don't know if he has since filled that spot, but it could be an indicator that they haven't all filled their spots yet. I don't know about Superior court judges.Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know or have a good idea if there are any judges in CA still looking for 1L interns? It's probably too late, isn't it? BROWNSVILLE? HELLS NO. You might as well do some pro-bono work with lawyers in your community and work at Target on the side or get something with a professor...But unpaid in Brownsville, Texas? No.

It happens...But you never know when you are going to land that big gig...I was rejected from a gig I really wanted, but two days later, another offer came through.LeDique wrote:Man, the internship interview I thought I totally nailed came up empty. Starting to feel down on this.

Don't feel bad, there are so few spaces for 1Ls. I was told a couple of times that I should be able to receive a 2L offer if I reapply, but they just did not have enough space to fit me. Keep trying, you will find a good job soon.

if you like the work you'd be doing i'd go for it. in the long run, the minimal amount you will be spending on rent will be nothing compared to your law school loansAnonymous User wrote:I have a chance to work at a small law firm in a far away city in Texas, closer to brownsville but its unpaid. corpus isn't bad at all if you are used to texas (i lived there for two years). especially during the summer when you can actually use the beach

Sad stuff, Got rejected from the ACLU in a southern state. Thought this was definitely going to be an offer. Is it a bad idea to email asking if my interview was the cause for the rejection?

I'd say it's appropriate to ask for specific areas you can improve for the future, and as you move forward in your summer job hunt. I wouldn't necessarily ask them for the reason you were rejected specifically--it's a lil tacky.

Are there any LA Superior Court internships for the judges themselves? All of the ones I've seen on their website seem to be for college grads, undergrads or "graduate interns," whoever those are (law school students? Maybe.) http://lasuperiorcourt.org/VolunteerOpp ... ip+Programbk187 wrote:LA Superior Court is taking applications through March 1.Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know or have a good idea if there are any judges in CA still looking for 1L interns? 1L here. This just happened to me today. A partner at the firm I interviewed with called and said that everyone I talked to really liked me, but that they didn't have enough room. He also said I "better apply again in the fall." Came down the vine that I got beat out by a 1L part-timer with a 4.0. Blast.LeDique wrote:Man, the internship interview I thought I totally nailed came up empty. Starting to feel down on this.
Lost my train of thought--Oh yeah, point is, it's not worth hurting your ego over.

Are all partners telling 1L interviewees this? I definitely got a similar pep talk for a 1L Diversity program -- how everyone loved me and it was really close, not enough spots, etc. and to keep in touch for the fall.InnocuousDiatribe wrote:1L here. Click the tab on that page that says "Externship Program." Deadline says Feb 15 but I'm fairly sure it's been extended to Mar 1.Anonymous User wrote:Are there any LA Superior Court internships for the judges themselves? What are some questions that I can ask small law firms that arent paid positions. Its like this, I ask a few questions but then I get the feeling the firms and non profits ive interviewed with want me to ask more questions.

Ask what their mission is, what was their career trajectory, what's their favorite thing about their job/most challenging aspect, what's an average day like for an intern, what's the feedback for interns like, will I get to work on a project from start to finish over the course of the summer, etc.Anonymous User wrote:What are some questions that I can ask small law firms that arent paid positions. Usually whats been happening is they give me answers to all of those questions 2 minutes into "introducing" their firm/org

Thanks, but it looks like the deadline is March 1 for the Juvenile Delinquency court externship, but February 15 for Civil, Criminal, Family Law, or Probate. Unless you're sure the Civil, Criminal, Family Law or Probate externship deadline got extended and they didn't update the site (which would be nice, because I'm not interested in Juvenile Delinquency).bk187 wrote:Click the tab on that page that says "Externship Program." Sometimes I just ask them about law school if I feel the need to keep talking. Like what really worked for you/wish you did differently? If I want to go into X field, what should I look into taking next year? What was the biggest adjustment going from an academic environment into the work place?Anonymous User wrote:cinephile wrote:Ask what their mission is, what was their career trajectory, what's their favorite thing about their job/most challenging aspect, what's an average day like for an intern, what's the feedback for interns like, will I get to work on a project from start to finish over the course of the summer, etc.Anonymous User wrote:What are some questions that I can ask small law firms that arent paid positions.
