Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2017
is it a real concern to go 0/9 at 1L OCI? All screeners were at relatively large firms in major markets. Good but not great grades/resume at a T20, so I obviously didn't expect an SA, just wondering whether not getting a CB in this situation is inherently indicative of poor interviewing.

It's not "inherently indicative" of poor interviewing by any means, but I would definitely work on interviewing/ask for feedback from your CSO or upperclassmen friends. 0/9 is not that uncommon with your grades/school rank--but the firms did screen you instead of weeding you out for a reason, so it's not like you were out of the running from the start. There's always room for improvement with interviewing.Anonymous User wrote:is it a real concern to go 0/9 at 1L OCI? All screeners were at relatively large firms in major markets. 2l here. It's not a real concern but you should be wary. I wouldn't lose sleep over it for now but just keep in mind later during the summer before OCI.Anonymous User wrote:is it a real concern to go 0/9 at 1L OCI? Gettin a 1L SA is difficult. However, it's not just about grades. It's also about interviewing. In fact, of all the 1L SAs I know of about 1/2 of them had grades at or below median. (I go to a T6 though). Of those who had average grades, the common factor was that they were ALL extremely charming and had great personalities (and I've witnessed some of their interviewing/oral arguments/etc. and can say they were the best I've seen). So not getting CBs, at most, tells you that you probably aren't an exceptional interviewer, but doesn't tell you that you are a POOR one.
FYI I had a similar record for 1L OCI as well and I struck out at 2L OCI (50+ screeners, 3 callbacks). Don't be in my position. I "fixed" my interviewing after OCI ended but it's too late now.

I can confirm WLRK has two accepted (NYU, Penn) and one open offer at Harvard. From what I've heard, insanely qualified applicants.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:We got a SA welcome email with a list of everyone in the summer class. Only 2 1Ls - NYU & Penn. Definitely two at H. One was already declined and I believe the other will be accepted.

Also received an invite for Latham's Diversity Academy. Anyone have more info on this other than what was in that flier? I hope getting an invite bodes well for OCI.
Also does that mean I can assume it's a ding for the 1L fellowship? Not complaining - the weekend trip sounds like a great opportunity!

I'm curious, what needed "fixing"? Were your answers not substantive enough, did you not craft your performance to the firm, did you not smile enough? I've heard those are common critiques, but I'd like to know what improvement meant in your case, if it's not too personal to ask.Anonymous User wrote:FYI I had a similar record for 1L OCI as well and I struck out at 2L OCI (50+ screeners, 3 callbacks). Got a Weil ding via email today. Applied 6-7 weeks ago, so at this point certainly expected it.

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2017
I thought I would share my experience. I just accepted a 1L summer associate position at my top choice. I am top 10% at a VERY regional T1.
My fall semester grades were Torts A (highest in class), Contracts A, Civ Pro A, LRW B and a C+ in a dispute resolution class that I don't understand why is required fall 1L. The exam was graded opposite of what was successful on my other exams, but luckily it was only a 2 credit hour course. I was ranked 13th in my class following fall semester.
It was difficult to get this job. I participated in spring OCI and had 10 screeners, and 1 callback with an offer 9 days later. I got this job mostly because of my ties and actively reaching out to the firm prior to OCI. I just called an alum who is a partner at the office and expressed my interest in his practice and let him know I would be interviewing with the firm at OCI. He told me he would tell the interviews at OCI about me, and put in a good word. He did, and that pretty much got me the job in addition to my strong ties to this market. No mention was ever made of the C+. I reached out to all the firms I screened with using this method. It was always well received and I believe everyone should actively reach out to alumni. They are likely your best hope.
My 1L job will be in a satellite office of a V100 in what would be called a tertiary market. I believe that tertiary markets are under targeted. Many of my classmates targeted only the 2 major markets my school feeds into, and I know of only 1 person who has even received a callback. I think the satellite offices in tertiary markets have a bit of an inferiority complex. During my interviews, my interviewers would mention how the pay was slightly lower than the major markets and one lady who started at a major market talked ad length about how much better she likes the tertiary market. I found this amusing, because honestly, there's not much fun to be had there. I'm headed back because I have a daughter due in July and I happen to think it is a great place to raise a family.
In conclusion, reach out to alumni and focus on your home markets where you can show strong ties, particularly if this is a tertiary market.
Thanks

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2017
I'm pretty sure at this point every summer position that I applied to has either rejected me explicitly, has stopped considering me, or I have a less than 1% chance of ever hearing back from them. This is after sending out about 75 applications.
Is it too late to start applying for new things now? Does anyone have any recommendations for where I can go to find some places in NY that are still taking new applications? I have an appointment with career services this week, but it hasn't been helpful thus far. I'm at YHS, but I'm on the autism spectrum so I don't do very well in interviews.

Different anon user. But same situation except I'm at CCN. I stopped applying to firms pretty much by end of January when it became clear that my grades were unrealistic to land a SA.Anonymous User wrote:I'm pretty sure at this point every summer position that I applied to has either rejected me explicitly, has stopped considering me, or I have a less than 1% chance of ever hearing back from them. I applied to some in house positions but only got one interview so far (which is scheduled for 3 weeks from now, talk about late timeline). They did not ask for my transcript (yet).
I looked for some more positions today but looks like a lot of the gov PI positions in DC have been filled long ago, and/or deadlines have passed. Any suggestions for applications I can send out in the DC metro area? I'll literally take anything and don't mind the funding from my law school. I just REALLY want DC for personal reasons.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
