I dont know if i would call it a luxury if you have to dry clean your clothes and the clothes you have to wear to work are dry clean only.

Maybe you should consider working for a firm that isn't Jones Day.Anonymous User wrote:I dont know if i would call it a luxury if you have to dry clean your clothes and the clothes you have to wear to work are dry clean only.

Re: NYC to 200k
How do you only make around 8k after taxes? Seems like you're paying too much in taxes. And why are you paying 3K for rent? There's other boroughs too besides Manhattan... You could easily get another 1K/month from your paycheck if you planned a little. Speaking from personal experienceAnonymous User wrote:It definitely depends on where you live. Right now take home is about 8k a month in NYC. Subtract 3k for rent (for an okay 1br) and 2.5k for student loans and i have 30k a year left over. Which is a lot until you consider the fact i dont have time to do anything for myself. So dry cleaning and food add up to another 400-500 a month. In my budget i have about $500 of disposable income a month after all of my random expenses. I would call that middle class.
Put me in a low cost of living state and i can buy a 4+ bedroom for 3k a month. Or have way more disposable income. Not to mention the lower taxes. That is easily upper middle.
We have a ton of cash coming in, but most people have a ton of cash going out, too.

Is there a chance Boston firms don’t match? Would look very bad if Ropes, Wilmer and Goodwin can’t even match Proskauer in Boston.

Having a job that requires you to wear (and affords you the opportunity to own) dry cleaning only clothes is a pretty good indicator of status...Anonymous User wrote:I dont know if i would call it a luxury if you have to dry clean your clothes and the clothes you have to wear to work are dry clean only.

Re: NYC to 200k
Nobody’s saying divorced. The point is that middle class isn’t what it used to be, lifestyle wise. As an example, folks all across the country used to be able to buy a decent home while earning a middle-class salary. That’s no longer true in many (most?) places.Anonymous User wrote:Sorry I really don't understand how you can argue that "middle class" should be divorced from median incomes with a straight face..Anonymous User wrote:Fair. But defining middle class as a percentage of median income means the same definition equates to a shittier and shittier lifestyle as more and more wealth is concentrated at the very tippy top.Dr. Nefario wrote:Relevant: http://www.businessinsider.com/middle-c ... sco-2018-2
ETA: which is why, I think, you have folks ITT claiming to feel middle class while earning $200k+
