How much do you check stuff after you give it to a secretary/legal assistant/whatever?
Obviously if they screw up you can't blame it on them. But if you go over Every change they make, you just spent all that time and could have just done it yourself.

So, this might well have already been covered, but if I start after Memorial Day, and haven't heard from my firm since I got the summer class roster and general stuff back in March, should I be worried? It seems like most of my friends have gotten their events schedules and other first day information.

Of course, literally seven minutes after I post this, I get the email. Fun stuff.Anonymous User wrote:So, this might well have already been covered, but if I start after Memorial Day, and haven't heard from my firm since I got the summer class roster and general stuff back in March, should I be worried? Associate here. The answer is that you have to check every change, and yes, that does mean its only marginally more efficient than doing it yourself, but when you're working 14 hours a day, 10% increases in efficiency become valuable.

This is also why most millennial don't use their secretaries very much.Anonymous User wrote:Associate here. I got thrown into the deep end and despite leaving at 7:30 some boomer asked sarcastically if I was calling it an early night. Everyone else has been super nice and fortunately I never got his name nor he mine.

everyone at my firm makes a big deal of telling summers not to stick around unless they have a specific reason to.
guy was probably trying to make an awkward boomer lawyer joke.

Yeah we've been told to stay as late as is needed but if nothing is going on, there's no reason to stay past 7pm.

Funny thing is this is a far sexier assignment than you'll ever get while actually working there.Anonymous User wrote:First assignment is pro bono scotus amicus brief. welcome to the firm now research these 150 cases.

Re: Summer Associates 2014: Thoughts, Anxieties, Experiences...
Felt like he might be joking at first, then he asked if I was a summer associate and I said yes and he asked how things were going, I told him they gave me quite a bit and he was like "But you're still leaving at 6:30...(checks his watch, realizes he's off by a bit)...or 7:30?" So I made up something about how my project had come to a good stopping point and they told me to head out. Then we chatted on the elevator down about the California wildfires lol. Maybe once he realized it was 7:30 and not 6:30 he put it together who knows. Whole thing was just kind of weird. Will now search for him and make sure to avoid his practice group.

My assignments aren't due for a while. It's a weird feeling cause I know I'm making progress but I hope the attorneys I'm doing stuff for don't think I'm slacking.

I have to consciously address my anxiety over too little work and too much time. After that, I feel better and can more calmly surf buzzfeed/redditbrotherdarkness wrote:I vacillate between feeling anxious due to having so much work and so little time or too little work and too much time.
