This is not won't necessarily be effective in the SA recruitment experience, but when I was looking for work post-undergrad/pre-law school (largely for paralegal work), I would send applications 2-3 weeks before a planned trip to a city, and then make a follow-up phone call the week before my travel. If my résumé passed their sniff test, I invariably got an interview (equivalent to a screener for SA recruitment purposes, but still a foot in the door).Anonymous User wrote:When mass mailing a firm that is not located where my law school is located, do I have to tell them that I will be in that city for a certain week?
I don't really have much money and it would suck for me to fly out and take care of arrangements myself, but if it is necessary, then I've gotta do it.
Or do firms actually invite you for a CB simply by looking at your email, resume, transcript, etc.?

Just got a CB invite from a firm that came to my OCI, but I didn't apply to through OCI.
We will see how this goes.

Its going to be weird when they ask why I didn't apply through OCI. Right now I am probably just planning on being mostly honest.hoos89 wrote:What's with the? You got a cb, congrats, and good luck!

None of the firms I had late CBs with through mass-mailing cared that I hadn't interviewed with them at OCI -- they know that we only have a limited number of firms we can bid on/interview withAnonymous User wrote:Its going to be weird when they ask why I didn't apply through OCI. Just pulled a V50 interview in NYC after following up this morning. I really needed that today.

what's people's move for following up by phone? I've been just calling saying I applied X weeks ago and am following up to see whether the firm's looking at write in applicants at this point. No CBs so far from this but a few positive indications

after 70+ rejections in the last week or so, the MP of a satellite office (of a mass mailer) emailed me today and asked for my transcript. i sent transcript and an updated resume, then she asked if i'd be in the area anytime soon and sent me a link to apply online. i told her i can be in the area at a time of her convenience... it feels nice to *sort of* feel wanted. she has not yet responded. fingers xx.

It's a little late, but I directly applied and got an interview out of it...Anonymous User wrote:For the "don't waste your time" list: Alston & Bird has stated that it has an absolute policy of not considering direct applications for SAs.

At this stage, what should a followup email look like? (emailed over a month ago in initial mass mail campaign)

Re: Reminder: Stop reading tea leaves; Start Mass Mailing
I've just been going with resume / transcript updates. For instance, I added my course schedule for this semester to my transcript and e-mailed that out saying essentially "Hey I'm still interested, here's my updated transcript with my schedule for the fall."Anonymous User wrote:At this stage, what should a followup email look like? In my initial e-mail I send my resume, cover letter and transcript. Have you guys been including a writing sample?

No, I read that if you send a writing sample, whoever reads it will likely judge it harshly unless they are reading a bunch of student writing samples at the same time with which they can compare yours. Not sure if this is credited or not, but it sounds reasonable to me.
Also, I haven't even been sending the transcript... just the cover letter and resume. I figure firms only care about 1L grades to the extent that they factor into the class rank, which I've included in the resume anyway. But that's just my intuition; I'd be interested to hear others' take on transcripts.

Re: Reminder: Stop reading tea leaves; Start Mass Mailing
A couple days ago I got (and accepted) a job offer from a firm I mass-mailed! I'm at a T14 where most of my hometown firms don't come to recruit, so I figured I'd have to do a lot of mass-mailing, but I wanted to share a success story.

25 or so; I needed to be back in my hometown (smaller secondary) for family reasons, so I mailed every firm there with a summer program. I got 9 CBs, so I was pretty happy with my response rate! Good luck!luckyjd wrote:congrats man! i'm also at t14, but mass mailing hasn't been very productiveAnonymous User wrote:A couple days ago I got (and accepted) a job offer from a firm I mass-mailed! Re: Reminder: Stop reading tea leaves; Start Mass Mailing
Just called some firms and made up a reason I'll be in the area next week. We'll see how that goes.
ETA: Just thought I would share that several firms told me that they would be starting to look at mass mail in the next 1-2 weeks.
