The National Law Journal’s annual Go-To Law School List paints a pretty sorry picture of first-year associate employment at the nation’s 250 largest law firms last year. The No. 1 law school sent just 55.9% of its 2009 graduates to NLJ 250 law firms. In 2008, the highest percentage of graduates heading to NLJ 250 firms was 70.5%. Importantly, the 2009 percentages include deferred associates, so an even smaller group actually went to work last year. Remember, the list consists of the very top performing schools, where job prospects in years past have proven recession-proof. Not so in 2009.

Tell ya what JohnBoy: I'll take back my harsh terms for accepting your hand in anonymous friendship if you can find macro data:
trends for quantity of all JD jobs over the past few years alongside all JD graduates.

All, t14, or by individual school?

It's next to impossible if your getting into T2 and T3. From what I gather, most of it is self-reported.

Not necessarily individual schools, but definitely T1-3. I'm seriously thinkin' bout going to a local TTT on a full ride.

Yeah, worried as much. :( I was hoping there'd be data culled from the employment side, much like NLJ 250 data, but a rough guesstimate of all JD positions, kinda like a poll: representative sample size, then extrapolate w/ margin of error.

If that were to be found, adding up the totals of JD grads would just be a lot of tedious addition which SOMEONE has to have done already.

Yeah, JohnBoy... I think just about everyone on TLS has seen the NLJ numbers. This stuff is all over the website and on ATL as well.

Wait, so Yale only sent 56% of its graduates to biglaw as opposed to 70% the previous year? The economy isn't really that bad, no way. Do you think it's a bad idea to go to Hofstra at sticker?

Hofstra, yes. Brooklyn, no.

Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about something else. When it says "No. 1 law school," I think it means the number one school that sent students to Biglaw. Yale tends to do a lot of clerks and academia. Regardless, when the number one school sending to biglaw is 55.9, things are rough.

Right, so the 56% is just because Yale sent more people to clerkships and academia.

Brooklyn is better? What are my chances at biglaw if I am top 10%?

(Oh god I can't keep this up much longer)

Yes, Brooklyn is better. Top 10% at Brooklyn is a lock for Biglaw, top 12/15% and you're borderline.

If you really want to make bank out of a NYC law school however, your best bet is the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Just make top third and you're probably good for V50, top 10% and you're looking at Weil Gotshal, Debevoise, etc.

Sorry to hear that. Do you mind sharing your experience even though the above post was indeed a flame? I've been hearing a lot of success stories lately, but I think the most helpful advice comes from those who have seen the other side of the coin. Unless that's asking too much?

Clintonius and lawschoollll has a mutual, escalating flame going for a bit, but they fessed up and it was obvious anyways. Other than that, it is just depressing news.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
