I unironically like 190 square feet. I had 190 last year, and this year I have 500. The 500 is just too much. I don't have any stuff. I have a medium-sized closet's amount of clothes. I have a computer. I have a pan and a pot and some basic silverware. I'm not going to be getting any more stuff in the near future. 190 square feet (and $190K/year) is the future. Let go of your worldly possessions.Abbie Doobie wrote:to 190 sq ft? why yes, yes they have: http://www.citylab.com/housing/2015/12/ ... ts/420645/SBL wrote:Has NY gone to 190 yet?

500 sq feet is enough for me in NYC or Houston, single or with SO. We buy so much unnecessary shit. Anyone needing more than that is just hoardingNekrowizard wrote:I unironically like 190 square feet. I had 190 last year, and this year I have 500. The 500 is just too much. I don't have any stuff. Lol. We've been looking at ridiculous 7000 sq. ft. homes we can't afford (although, maybe in a couple years...). I did 500 sq. ft. with SO and a dog for 3 years. Will never go back to those dark days. In DC area though - can't imagine what trying to live in a real house in the NY area would cost without an 8-year commute.Abbie Doobie wrote:to 190 sq ft? why yes, yes they have: http://www.citylab.com/housing/2015/12/ ... ts/420645/SBL wrote:Has NY gone to 190 yet?

I lived in a ~350 sq foot studio during law school... in Philadelphia.Desert Fox wrote:I can't even imagine what a 500 sq ft one bed looks like. Having a place to put a desk is 180. Having a real dining table is a prerequisite for adulthood.
Pretending 500 sq feet is good is insane.

Wanting to have our own desks, a dining table, a decent sized living room, and a kitchen usable by two people. We upgraded to more than double after that and it was soooo worth it. If you're single and never spend time in your place then 500 sq. feet is OK. Otherwise what DF saidmvp99 wrote:500 sq ft is not enough? why? was it the dog (great dane?)? honest questionCapitol_Idea wrote:Lol. I doubt my 1br in the city is even 500 sq feet, but it's perfectly comfortable. Kitchen that overlooks the living room, large desk with dual monitors, large couch / coffee table / TV. The bedroom's a little on the small size but whatever.
I grew up in a 2500-3000sq feet house and a ton of the space just went unused. Plus that shit takes forever to clean.

There is literally nothing wrong with 500 sq ft. I could see needing more if you have a huge dog (though you should probably get rid of the dog in that instance tbh fam) or some kids. If you need more you own a ton of dumb shit you should get rid of.

Re: NY to 190k??(possibly led by Paul Weiss)
I need a 1 bed and they're usually larger than 500 sq ft. I need the separated room cuz I hate it when my cooking smells get everywhere. I guess a better vent system would work, but apartments have shitty ventilation in general.
this looks sick though if I had a kid. I'd use the bed room as office space, or put a couch and a projector there.

Yeah if you don't have kids and don't spend tons of time in your place then there's no sense having a big house generally. Having kids means A. needing space for them to exist and B. places for them to play and C. guest room for visiting family or people helping out with childcare early on. Seriously 1100 was more than enough when we were childless with 2 dogs, but now even 2000 sq. ft. isn't enough. The crazy mansions we're looking at half-jokingly are excessive but like I could do 4000 sq. ft. and not feel like space is being wasted. Cleaning it is a PAIN though.

i live in 650 sq feet with wife and 2 dogs and it is perfectly fine. But you need to do stuff like mount flat screen tv, put in shelves high up on the wall to make the most of the space. We have had up to three people staying here and honestly that is crowded, but even having one guest is really not a problem. The only issue is that there is one bathroom so in the morning you need to figure out who is getting ready in what order.

Never understood how people used 2000 sq ft+. Then I had three kids.
Part of the issue is inefficiency, though, as our basement is relatively under-used.

we have barely more than 1100 sq ft with a toddler and an au pair. it's fine.Capitol_Idea wrote:Yeah if you don't have kids and don't spend tons of time in your place then there's no sense having a big house generally.
