There also seems to actually be a good amount of Chicago love, just most people aren't flaunting it for fear of backlash.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah lots of ca and NYC love.Anonymous User wrote:Took an informal survey among people I know, and it seems like NUers did better this year than last, even with the cold wall put up by Chi firms.

Can you guys comment on whether the chicago love is to a large degree transactional? That's been my impression-that people who were all in on lit in Chi had a harder time, but curious whether thats consistent with who you know.Anonymous User wrote:^^Yup.Anonymous User wrote:There also seems to actually be a good amount of Chicago love, just most people aren't flaunting it for fear of backlash.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah lots of ca and NYC love.Anonymous User wrote:Took an informal survey among people I know, and it seems like NUers did better this year than last, even with the cold wall put up by Chi firms.

Definitely mostly transactional. Heard from one person they were explicitly told they were rejected largely due to only expressing interest in lit. Talked to many others who felt similarly (though not explicitly told).

I don't get it, are you saying people should flaunt it and make others feel bad for striking out? Or do you just generally think people who got jobs in Chi should feel guilty? Perhaps I'm missing the connotation here.Anonymous User wrote:No problem, we'll all get into a closet and giggle together.Anonymous User wrote: There also seems to actually be a good amount of Chicago love, just most people aren't flaunting it for fear of backlash.

Lol - what? Nobody should feel guilty about getting Chicago - it's just been tough for a lot of people so it's generally not polite to walk around and talk about it. But since we're talking data points and I generally have no interest in being polite: I had no trouble cracking the Chicago market without any ties although I did stress a transactional interest.Anonymous User wrote:I don't get it, are you saying people should flaunt it and make others feel bad for striking out? Nobody feels guilty. In fact, we're on Cloud 9 and wanna dance. It's jus that we're mindful of the minority of students who didn't get anything (yet).Anonymous User wrote:I don't get it, are you saying people should flaunt it and make others feel bad for striking out? No one is saying the Chicago market is ALL dead.Anonymous User wrote:Anecdotal: I was gung-ho lit and was still able to crack Chicago, so Chicago wasn't ALL dead
It just so happens that the Chicago market is MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.

All the anecdata points to Chicago being tough, especially if you wanted to do Litigation. That means probably a fair number of good gpas being shut out entirely and some missing Kirkland/Sidley and deciding that NYC was a better career move. I have a friend in the latter camp. But while they went 3 for 3 on callbacks in NY, they only went 1 for 5 in Chicago. Just because you know someone with a 3.5 that got Kirkland doesn't mean Chicago wasn't objectively a hard market and that a ton of people got slaughtered.
On a semi-related note. Does anyone want to confirm/deny the rumor that Mayer Brown told a bunch of the lit people in its summer class this year they could only have offers if they did transactional?
