Re: UChicago Law OCI 2019
I have high grades and have done quite well among the top few firms in each of the markets I'm applying in and quite poorly outside of those firms (hard/tie-sensitive markets, not NYC). To me it seems like that's uncorrelated to my interest level and how I felt the interview went. Anyone else experiencing something similar or different?
My hunch is that either (a) lower tier firms just care less about grades and I'm not a superb interviewer in general and/or (b) you have to overcome some skepticism in an interview to show you warrant a callback when you'll likely get offers at significantly more "prestigious" firms.

These two seem tied. If you cant show good interest then they probably don't care about grades. Its less of a skepticism that they think you will go to a more "prestigious" firm, and more of a hunch (a), problem.Anonymous User wrote:I have high grades and have done quite well among the top few firms in each of the markets I'm applying in and quite poorly outside of those firms (hard/tie-sensitive markets, not NYC). There is definitely some unofficial "yield protection" at various firms. Many of my friends noticed this, as did I. (Just as one anecdote, I received offers from Cravath, DPW, and S&C, but not from Debevoise. And Ropes had a partner "check in" with me before extending an offer, which was a pretty obvious attempt to gauge whether I'd accept if they offered).Anonymous User wrote:These two seem tied. I don't think the problem was not showing good interest, I struggled even at firms that I had very real, specific interests in and resulting "why x?" pitches. I at least don't think I did any better at "why x?" at the top firms. Though of course it could be.Anonymous User wrote:These two seem tied. Re: UChicago Law OCI 2019
From a combination of documents given by OCS it appears that every student Cravath offered at Chicago's OCI last year turned it down (out of ten), which looks bad and I'm sure firms want to avoid things like that happening to them.Anonymous User wrote:There is definitely some unofficial "yield protection" at various firms. When did Jenner DC ding you? I had what I thought was a fairly calamitous interview but haven’t heard anything.
