My impression (last year) was that White & Case was more concerned with travel costs than other firms. For instance, their travel agent didn't want to give me a hotel so I wound up having to stay 20 miles outside of Manhattan. It's possible that they are more concerned with calling back people from 300 miles away than other firms are.

My impression (last year) was that White & Case was dying. Their travel agent didn't want to put me in a hotel, because they were all too expensive, and over budget even if I opted to take the train. I wound up having to pay out of pocket to stay in a hotel 20 miles outside of Manhattan. The lunch was 15 dollar specials, and tap water. It took me about 3 months to get reimbursed. Rereading this, I'm aware of how spoiled I sound. However, if one firm in a market is disproportionately frugal, they either have an innovative strategy in play, or they're scared shitless.
Firm's that have institutional clients like Deutsche Bank don't "die." W&C will always be one of the premiere law firms in the world because of its institutional clients and relationships with DB. No different than S&C with GS. Think this thread is good and these anecdotes are helpful but statements like the above are dangerous especially when unfounded (or based off one individual's experience) and general.

You had one experience with a firm and for whatever reason they were frugal with you. Hard for me to understand how you extrapolate that to how the "firm is dying." Number of other reasons; i.e. maybe they already extended enough callbacks and really didn't need anyone else to come in or maybe they just didn't want you that bad (being close to recruiting at my firm i know they tend to go above and beyond for certain people; wouldn't be surprised with the opposite).

FWIW when I was interviewing, a V10 firm acted in a similar way to me (i.e. with a cheap lunch and really struggling to put me off for housing); these situations happen to everyone on random situations but unless it becomes more than a one-off situation, don't think it is helpful to sound the alarm.

All these firms are beholden to the great envelope lobby. Probably.

Recruiting actually puts a lot of thought into them, almost like they're greeting card writers for Hallmark. They don't realize that nobody reads them. If it were up to me, I would have them sing like the singing birthday cards. You would have the Irish bagpipe for rejection letters, and Journey for acceptances. This is one of many reasons why I would never get a job in recruiting.

I am sure it's part of an automated system that hasn't been updated. I guess it's better than the alternative of never knowing or keeping up hope that a callback might be just around the corner. I appreciate the closure of getting dings even if it hurts.
