Though I respect Aschup's judgment I must bump this thread just to share a PM from a DIFFERENT user that seems to support OP's claims:

I have a friend who was/is a first-year litigation associate with Firm X (and was also deferred by them in 2010). He was just given three months to find a new gig and was told they had taken on too many associates in his class. I guess this confirms that. Thanks for the info.
